I really found this book a struggle to read. The actual story was ok in theory but the style in which it was written does not really appeal to me. My son reccomended it to me, as he had read "the kite runner" and enjoyed it. It was his copy I read, I'm so glad I didnt buy it myself. I may enjoy "the kite runner" more, I hope so. I got the feeling he was writing a film script rather than a novel, it will probably make a better film than a book. I know I am in a minority but this is my honest review.

"The Suspicions of Mr Whicher" is a fascinating account of a Victorian murder mystery. I was not familiar with the Road Hill House murder case, but it appears to be well-known - which means I had a significant gap in my knowledge of British true crime stories. In 1860, the gruesome and tragic killing of a young boy, Saville Kent, at his countryside home and in the dead of night, gripped the nation, with everyone in Britain, it seems (including, for example, Charles Dickens) having their opinion as to who had committed the brutal murder, and with what motive. The newspapers carried daily reports of developments (or rumours) in the case. Most people were convinced, like the detectives assigned to investigate the boy's death, that the answers lay ... Reading this book is like being told about a great film by someone who saw it on a plane; shoddily related and in danger of ruining a good thing for you.
You know what it's about by now. As a science student this book appalled me - the writing standard is shocking. There's no real structure, quotes are miscellaneous. If you read the first ten pages you can stop, because you won't learn anything new after that. If I handed this in to my lecturers, I thought, I'd be in real danger of failing, positive thinking or no.
The worst part is that some really interesting ideas are presented here, they're just presented in such a frivolous manner! As if exclamation marks explain everything! It's infuriating, and a waste considering that a lot of people are ... Read More:

An enjoyable read but follows a very similar pattern to the first book which makes it far too predictable and slightly repetitive. Having said that, I think the relationship between Bella and Jacob was far superior than Edward and Bella - how many people will shoot me down for that? :). I think this is because it's much more natural, the latter's relationship always seemed a bit superficial, what with Bella always being dazed by Edward's beauty. Then again, perhaps Jacob is too good for the likes of Bella. Her constant references to her metaphorical holes did irk me quite a bit. Also, the comparisons to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet were just a tad too corny.

This graphic novel has been given a massive amount of praise and to be honest, I'm not sure why. Perhaps because it's Alan Moore, perhaps because it is Batman vs Joker, perhaps because it has a Joker origin. I'm not sure.

I read it in one sitting, it's a very short and at £10 is a bit expensive. As it's so short there's not really a story. None at all. Batman turns up at the begining and the end, the middle is mainly flashbacks to the Joker origin. Which is campy and somewhat uninteresting.

The end is somewhat ambiguous following on the unexplored idea of should Batman kill the joker and why.

Really, the problem is not bad writing, just that it's too short and doesn't really explore the relationship at all.

There are better ... Read More:

This book swiftly draws the reader in to a world of tragedy, coincidence and mystery, described with humour and some sympathy. The story races along, the telling of it embellished with clever and at times unexpected use of language. But I read Kate Atkinson books at least twice - once for the plot and the second time to savour her writing. With one exception, the characters are well-drawn, if not rounded. The character of Louise Monroe figures large in this novel and inhabits an unsatisfying corner of the narrative. In some instances she is as real as your best friend; in others she is like an avenging but powerless angel or devil, and carries little credibility. Notwithstanding the enigma of Louise, this is a cracking book.

This is not great literature but it was a really good holiday read with a strong ending which did not leave you feeling let down. It is a combination of "Upstairs Downstairs" mixed with elements of "The Go-Between" and with a splash of "Brideshead Revisited". Well worth a read.
