Ed Cooke's little opus is a much-needed reminder of very useful mnemonic techniques, especially those which have to do with word association. This has been recommended as, for example, very useful in vocabulary recognition and learning when studying foreign languages, vocabulary being the most difficult and endless part of foreign-language learning. The more absurd, or indeed obscene, the association, the better it will be remembered. As said, a useful book, especially for students, who have a lot to remember in a short space of time. Well done Ed (was that his name?)!

Maybe Robert Macfarlane and Jay Griffiths should be forced to read this book, because without a single overdressed metaphor, without a single unnecessary word of any kind, it tells a series of subtle, clear and profoundly moving stories. It's a delight to meet Spike, and Chicken, and the other birds who soar and wing through the pages, the rhythmical, shapely pages. Envy! I wish I'd written this. Observation wonderful. Interesting that birds are so despised. I read this because having kept chickens I've also come to know and feed jackdaws and rooks, and all three kinds of bird are so bright and so interesting that I simply can't see why we once despised them. I shall read the sequel, if any.

Like some of the other reviewers I had not realised the extent of Robert's achievements until I read this. He was a great rider and it will take some time and changes in the way we train cyclists in this country before we see any male rider as good all round as he was. The book itself evoked real anger in me, where it talks about Robert being duped into second place in the Tour of Spain. This sort thing shows a lack of self esteem on the part of those who pulled it off. And denied both Robert and Britain of a win in a major tour. I found the email correspondence at the end of the book both fascinating and poignant. If Robert ever reads any of this stuff on Amazon all I can say thank you for being an inspiration to me and many others. It is people like Robert ... Read More:

Maurice Wiggin's book, The Passionate Angler inspired the world-class BBC series, A Passion for Angling, in which Chris Yates starred. The success of this film catapulted this quiet, modest man into the limelight, and into the homes of anglers and non-anglers alike. It opened up a whole new world of exploration for him, and when Penguin/Hamish Hamilton published 'How to Fish' in 2006, it became an overnight success.

'Out of the Blue' published by Hamish Hamilton on the 4th September, 2008, looks set to outstrip 'How to Fish' in terms of sales. The book is already on its 2nd print run, which might come as a surprise to people who previously saw Chris as a coarse fisherman, because this wonderful new book is about sea fishing; bass in particular. ... Starting from the day in 1965 when his father took him to see Liverpool play at Bolton, Brian Reade has been a Liverpool supporter. In the 43 years since then although he as witnessed many highs - 47 trophies, which supporters of most other clubs can only dream about - but also extreme lows in the 80's with the tragedies at Heysel and Hillsborough.

The books strongest chapters are regarding these two events and their aftermath. Reade passionately describes the guilt and shame felt by Liverpool supporters after Heysel in 1985 and also the anger felt by these same people after the authorities attempted to make them the scapegoats for the disaster at Hillsborough four years later.

When it comes to football, Brian Reade writes as a Liverpool ... Read More:

I am one of the fans of Paul Tomkins books and one of the lucky receiver of the pre-released signed copy.

I just couldnt put it down, and for the LFC fan out there, this book really can give us knowledge of what have been done from scratch before by Shankly and Paisley to bring LFC to the golden era in footballing sense, and what is being done by the latest manager, Rafa, to bring us back to the place we, LFC all around the world belong.

I just hope this book is thicker than it is!
