Stephenson is probably my favourite author so I waited with bated breath for his latest, Anathem, and have just finished reading it for the first time.

The story is set on a fictional world which is divided in basically 'doers' and 'thinkers'. An event occurs which upsets the whole stability of this world.

It is not as accessible as his other titles, using as it does a fictional language to describe many ordinary things and does not rattle along like many of his other books. There is a large amount of philosophical discussion which can be rather dense, particularly when using the made-up language. I've also a feeling that you'll learn a lot about orbital mechanics while reading it. However, by the end of it, I think ... Read More:

There's no shortage of glossy "Doctor Who" books on the shelves but this is by far the most revealing. It digs deep and gives the reader a fascinating insight into the exhaustion, exhileration and relentless hard slog that goes into the flagship show. Read it, even if you don't care for DW, if you want to know the truth about a writer's life. It's very warts-and-all, at times very funny, and always comes over as being honest. You won't get closer than this to finding out why things turned out the way they did. In particular, RTD's thoughts on "Journey's End", the S4 finale, are intriguing and reveal how he copes with the inevitable gulf between his first concept of how a story should end and the version that reaches the screen, subject to the ... I bought this last xmas for my son, who was then 3 months old. He was interested in it as soon as he got it - initially just looking at the pictures when I turned the pages. He then learned to turn the pages himself and loved the Daddy and Baby pictures the best - they always made him smile, as did the mirror on the front and he also loved to crinkle the pages. He loved this book! Even now, at just over a year old, I keep it in his cot as he still plays with it sometimes when he wakes up from a nap. He now absolutely loves books and am sure this fab initial introduction helped.
I cant recommend this highly enough! Am buying it this year for my new niece.

Ignore the bitter people who have bought this book under another title and then didnt have the common sense to return it?

The Story is fantastic and very well written. I ususally plump for 18th Century Naval Fiction, so i was unsure what to expect.

The book is a genuine page turner and many a time i have been tired for work because "i just do another chapter before i turn out the light"!!

The characters are engaging and their life so hard that it makes you gasp. Despite the fact that Gengis Khan probably wasnt a very nice chap, you do warm to him and his tough little family.

It would have got 5 stars except that i have a little trouble remembering the many strange character names, but that could ... Read More:

this is a great, well organised textbook... a very good aid to learning. the only problem is, there's a factual mistake on every other page! all anatomy textbooks have mistakes, due to rushing the books through editing, but gray's is especially bad! make sure you buy another book if you want to gain a more accurate knowledge and read about topics from a number of different authors
