Having read the previous Matthew Shardlake novels I was eager to read this one. I wasn't disappointed - it is easily the best one yet.

What I liked most was the brilliant evocation of the cruelty of Tudor England. The religious fanaticism has been done before, as has the treachery and power politics along with the corruption, but the way these were all melded together and the thorny subject of judicial torture thrown in it made the story basically become a lot darker.

The idea of the events taking place within the enclosed world of the Royal Progress was a nice way of taking a murder mystery staple plot device and making it relevant to the period, a kind of Tudor "Murder on the Orient Express" if you like.

Great revision of this essential camping guide. Now it features more
campsites across England (70 rather than the original 40), and some of the
originals have been substituted, not sure why? The photos are still first
class and the expanded 'handy information' gives a neat little overview of
what to do and where to eat & drink we loved a secret little locals pub
right on the beach in Dorset, recommended in the guide. The write-up and
information for the campsites are accurate, and the authors seem to favour
the kind of campsites I prefer - small ones with personality, rather than
the large, static caravan type. All in all another great guide from the
dependable Cool Camping dudes.

I don't like leaving books unfinished. I'm aware that many novels are slow-starters, and it's almost always worth persevering to the end. BUT, I think it's safe to say that I gave this total dud a fair crack of the whip. If you can give up on a book after 330 pages, it must be pretty dull indeed.

As far as the romance element was concerned, I couldn't care less. None of the characters were very sympathetic or even three dimensional. And for a writer to be able to spend so many pages describing the horrors of the trenches without moving me to a single moment of emotion - well, he must have a true talent for draining the feeling out of anything.

I honestly don't get what all the fuss is about. A truly appalling novel.

So how does Mark Billingham cope in his first (almost) standalone novel outside of his D.I. Thorne series? Pretty good, actually. On the surface the subject matter might not appear all that different - London mobs and gangsters and police procedural (or lack of it since his police officers often tend to work in an "unofficial" capacity) - but freed from the restrictions of the lead D.I.'s troubled private life and the increasing banality of the supporting characters over the last few Thorne novels, In The Dark is able to take Billingham's dark exploration of the criminal underbelly of London much further.

It may not always make for pleasant reading, but Billingham's representation of the dangers on the streets of the UK today seems to ... Read More:

I've read all of Adele Parks books, and thoroughly enjoyed them all. This book has a different pace to the other books, but again, I couldn't put it down! I would definitely recommend this to anyone who fancies a good summer holiday read.

I was expecting a huge tome full of Confuscian statements which are allegorical to warfare. What I received was a 69-page book of short instructions which are dirrectly about warfare, but in many cases allegorical to life.

Possibly they're all in some way applicable to the day-to-day, the fighting with fire section does seem a bit specialised, but doubtless the scales will fall from my eyes at some stage and I will be able to use its teachings in buying tangerines from waitrose.

The best thing about the book is the ability to spice up conversation. Never again will I use a hackneyed marketing phrase where something from Sun Tzu will work. Brilliant.

This is the one book I unfailingly recommend to others who want to be more successful in work or life in general.
I've read it several times and still find its ideas central to how I go about things in life. Hence buying it for a friend just now!
Covey makes a compelling (and welcome) case for the substance of real character over the cult of projected and perceived personality as the 'secret' to sustainable success in life.

169.The Kitchen Gardener: Grow Your Own Fruit and Veg by: Alan Titchmarsh

No one (apart from the late, great Geoff Hamilton) does gardening books for beginners like Alan Titchmarsh. Plenty of practical, common sense advice delivered in an encouraging but non-patronizing tone to reassure the total novice. Clear text together with a good 'directory' of fruit & veg make this ideal for the newcomer to the veg patch. This book could have been improved by fewer photos of Titchmarsh and more clearly captioned pictures of gardening tasks/pests & diseases/plant cultivars etc. I was also irritated by his statement that organic matter such as manure or compost is insufficient to maintain healthy soil without the addition of a general purpose fertilizer. This is total nonsense & an irresponsible statement from a celebrity ... Read More:

I doubt I would have been so offended by this book had it not been for the pretentious fawings of so many people who claimed it had changed their life. I was intrigued. I was then very disappointed. What a load of new age drivel. Change my life my foot. This book is pretentious and seems to have been lifted from an array of other superior novels and fables. I felt cheated by the rave reviews and am still somewhat dumbfounded by it.
