I must be honest and say that I started this book in tandem with another just because I didn't think I'd be terribly interested in the subject matter, much as I love Bryson. By the end of the second chapter, I wanted to book a ticket on the next flight to Perth. The flora, fauna and folks that inhabit this wondrous country intrigue me strangely.

Bill Bryson is one of the funniest writers I have ever encountered. I find myself reading bits aloud at the slightest hint of encouragement. I challenge anyone to read his discussion of running through a park trying to get away from some scary dogs, and ending up in an unsuspecting housewife's back garden, without laughing out loud. If you can get through that section without giggling, you ... Read More:

This book was essential to me having a fantastic week in Paris.

Its Metro map served me particularly well and much easier to use than standing ina crowdd of 50 other tourists trying to decipher maps on the underground map on a wall.

Recommendations on ways to entertain children (we had a 4yr old with us)were pretty much spot on and all in all i would recommend the guide as an invaluable companion.

An aimless and tedious meander through British life as seen from an outsider's point of view. Some of this book is very funny but it is full of pointless anecdotes and inane drivel. This book is too long and much of it is instantly forgettable. Not good!

I visited New York for the first time last Nov and I was given a mini rough guide to New York by a friend. I would have been lost without it.

It was a bible in my bag.

I am due to visit the big apple again in Jan and I decided to purchase the full rough guide to New York and I am not disappointed.

I have also order the mini rough guide to carry round New York when I get there.

The information contained within the book is well written and informative.

The maps at the back are a god's send and must not be under estimated in the overall picture and use of this product.

I would recommend this title to anyone wanting a comprehensive guide of New York.

We are planning a fly-drive trip to the USA and we have been looking for information/things to do in places. We initially looked at the Foders books but then stumbled across this book. What a fantastic informative book, the only problem with having this book is we need to book a longer holiday !!!
It is excellent value for money and a must have for fly-drive touring of the USA.

I recently spent some time touring around New Zealand and this guide was my constant companion(as well as my wife). For your money you get an extemely comprehensive guide to one of the most beautiful countries in the world. From the lush green farmland of the north island to the barren desolate stretches of the south island "Gods own country" has it all.

Each area is dealt with in separate chapters and each chapter begins with the "highlights" of the area,so if the highlights dont appeal keep driving! You will find the history of the more interesting places contained in this guide ,not a full on history lesson mind you but just enough to impress the wife with until she picks up the guide for herself ,then the game is well and truly up!The maps ... Even though Clarkson himself says so ("Good God I love being middle class") the truth is much more inspiring and it's nice to see how modest he is. Truth is, he's actually working class but has come into a lot of money using his talents over the years.

Dave Gorman for me is one of the founding fathers of the recent quest comedy novels that have filled my non-fiction shelves. With his `Are you Dave Gorman' and his `Googlewack Adventure' I was entertained and educated. `Unchained America' follows a similar path to these two earlier books, but with some major differences. Gorman has made TV shows out of all of his books, but whilst previously he adapted them using the photos and short films he made himself, this time he goes out to make a documentary. Unfortunately, this means that the book suffers.

I have not seen the TV show, but having read the book it seems like it was a difficult undertaking. Dave set out across America to go from the East coast to the West with only using unchained stores, ... Read More:
