This book is terrible, the directions are vague in the extreme with no distances or times mentioned between landmarks so when it says 'take right fork' you had better hope there is only 1... On the walk we tried there wasnt! Nice information about the flora and fauna which is great but not at the expense on directional detail.

I wonder if the authors of this book actually did the walk as some of the directions are also contradictory. In the end it turned an attempt at a walk into a massively frustrating random tramp including much backtracking and restarting before giving up and going home!

This book did manage to find itself one place... THE BIN!

Books : A Walk Along The Tracks: Britain's Disused Railway Lines
As a keen walker and railway history enthusiast,I looked forward to reading this book. It was only after receiving it and reading the introduction, plus the description of the first walk, that I realised it was, in fact, over 20 years old (having first been published in 1982)!
This probably makes all the information in it totally irrelevant and of little use to anyone wishing to walk the lines in question.
Had I known this, I definitely would not have bought it and feel rather cheated that it's actual age is not prominently displayed in your description.

Books : Hillwalking in Snowdonia: Glyders, Carneddau and Outlying Areas (Cicerone British Mountains)
A very informative beautifully illustrated guide that makes you want to visit the remotest parts of North Wales.

Most tourists and walkers alike stick to the Northern hills which include the Carneddau,Glyders and Snowdon. The more adventurous go to the Moelwyns and possibly the occasional trip to the rough Rhinogs. You will hardly find anyone tramping in The Arans,Berwyns,Arrenigs,or the wildest parts of central wales around Plumlymon.

Most of these outlying mountain ranges involve a great deal of planning ahead, there are few if any recocnisable paths especially in The Arrans.I for one have lived in Wales all my life but have yet to walk the Rhinogs let alone the Berwyns or Arrenigs, these are trully remote areas where even on a busy ... It's true this is not primarily a walking guide - it's a climbing guide. It's not a badly written climbing guide - it seems to be quite an well considered introduction to the Picos for climbers. So this is a grade for what it is, rather than for what it is not.

As the teacher I know he is, N D-T might (or might not) appreciate the above comment.

The routes are good (spread of difficulty, distance, technical interest and scenic variety) fairly accurately described and with an understandable bias toward the north and west of West Yorkshire as that's where the more obviously scenic and hilly terrain is. I'm not sure whether more research directed towards the east and south of the county might have unearthed more routes in this neck of the woods or simply identified locations, such as quarries and woodland, where considerate biking is tolerated. It's a shame that this area is so poorly represented.

However, in the text, N D-T has missed an opportunity to really give a flavour of the natural and ... Read More:
