These guides are necessities when hiking Offa's Dyke. Sometimes they tend to gloss over the difficulty of particular sections and instructions aren't always perfectly clear or accurate. This can result in wasted trail time. And, of course, the guide will not tell you that some sections have not been well maintained such as the signpost we encountered fallen down in the middle of a very large farm field. We spent an hour going around in circles trying to determine our route. Be sure to purchase the most recently updated copy of the guide. We purchased an outdated copy on Amazon.com and it cost us hours of trail finding. Not a great thing when it's getting dark, your legs hurt, and you're hungry.

This is a great book and as the previous reviewers have advised it is really accurate. I'm about two thirds through the walks at the moment and have yet to get lost on any - so that must in itself be a testament! There are 1 or 2 walks which aren't as exciting as others and then there are those that simply take your breath away. On the whole I'd recommend trying some any of the walks in the book as proof. As always remember it's Exmoor. 6 - 10 miles on Exmoor is vastly different walking to 6 - 10 miles in Norfok!

I own this book and also the Pathfinder guide to Hampshire and New Forest. 50 Walks has nearly double the number of walks but, as the previous reviewers say, the directions are terrible. I find the maps very hard to read because they are hand drawn and extremely basic (a road, track and path are all drawn exactly the same way). Secondly, the written directions are often misleading or poorly worded (again, the ambiguous definition of 'track' was a problem, along with many other niggles). We have gotten lost on four out of five walks from this book. By contrast, we have had no trouble with the Pathfinder book, which has excellent OS maps included and clear directions. Whilst I would agree that an OS map is useful in conjunction with the book I have, on occasion, actually needed the directions (and description of landmarks) to help out during a walk. I have completed four of the walks in this book and all have been really good, particularly those on Exmoor and the Quantocks. The routes take you past interesting places and some beautiful scenary - very well picked in my opinion. It also often gives extensions to 5mile walks to make them up to 8 which I liked. I will certainly be walking more routes in this book.

my husband and I are going to Pyreness in 2 weeks time. the book help us to plan the route and the accommodation. It's a very useful book if you plan to do GR10 or GR11.

Just returned from a 2 week holiday in Lanzarote, and really glad we bought this book, and the accompanying map before we went. The walks take you to parts of the island you would never see by road, and gives you the confidence to explore without wondering whether or not you are going somewhere you shouldn't be. There are 32 routes in all, of varying lengths and difficulty, all very well explained. Don't be put off with the authors' pre-occupation with GPS - we don't have one, and using the map sections in the book, and following the very clear route descriptions, we never had any problems finding the paths. Well worth getting the Lanzarote map which is a companion to the book, as it helps to plan which walks you want ... Read More:
