Kabak to Alunca optional waymarked route was particularly bad. All in all it was an amazing place but we found the book dissapointing.

Two easy steps to becoming a proficient GPS user: 1/ Throw out the Garmin owner's manual that comes with your unit, and 2/ Purchase "Getting to Grips with GPS". I bought this book after attending two GPS day courses run by the authors and can say that this up-to-date book is a model of clarity and, most importantly, usability. I find it hard to see how it could be bettered. The book covers both Garmin and Magellan devices and it doesn't matter if your specific model isn't pictured in the book. All Garmin screens and functionality are near identical and I'm guessing Magellan will be the same, too. So, whatever unit you use, you are well catered for. This is the best map you can buy for walking in the area. (Unless it's raining in which case get the plastic coated one). Only one criticism, the way the Ordnance Survey have the annoying habit of calling the area 'The English Lakes' when everybody else calls it 'The Lake District'.

First and foremost it needs to be acknowledged that this appears to be the only (current) English language guidebook covering this area. As such, if you are a mono-linguistic English speaker who wants to buy a guidebook to help you identify where to seek out your via ferrata thrills, then stop reading this review and buy the book! I bought this book prior to my first trip to the Dolomites after it was acknowledged in the UK magazine "Trail". The centre area covered is approx 90 mins car drive from Verona/ Brescia and perhaps 2 hours from Milan (opposite direction) so easily accessible from the UK by scheduled and "low cost" airlines. This book is terrible, the directions are vague in the extreme with no distances or times mentioned between landmarks so when it says 'take right fork' you had better hope there is only 1... On the walk we tried there wasnt! Nice information about the flora and fauna which is great but not at the expense on directional detail. I wonder if the authors of this book actually did the walk as some of the directions are also contradictory. In the end it turned an attempt at a walk into a massively frustrating random tramp including much backtracking and restarting before giving up and going home! This book did manage to find itself one place... THE BIN!
