After reading this I feel that the most misunderstood moment in history has to be World War 1. There are many more forgotten moments but the thing about WW1 is most people think they know about it. It's interesting that people think "Oh what a lovely war"- a musical for heavens sake! Poetry and even Black Adder are some how important historical references. They all have to be by their very nature distortions of what really happened. Prussian aristocrats turned it into a stalemate in memory to eradicate their own failings and the peace movement hailed it as a catastrophe even though far fewer died in this war compared to the "successful" WW2. Being a humble diarist myself, I am always fascinated by books of this genre and this is a very good one. It gives us an insight into the lives of five very different people who kept diaries in the immediate post World War Two era. They were part of the Mass Observation project which was set up to record the lives of ordinary people in Britain. Simon Garfield weaves the five lives together. The people featured never met, but they all lived through the same times of uncertainty when rationing continued despite the fact the war had ended. The great thing about these diaries is how they weave together discussion on national and international topics with the details of mundane private lives. I initially bought this book as reference material for a novel I was writing on Nazi scientific developments and found myself caught up in the very well presented 'conspiracy theory' that the Nazis had developed (and even tested!) an atom bomb ahead of the Americans in World War II. The theory that General Patton had rushed ahead of US Army orders to capture the science behind this bomb, and might indeed have been assassinated to protect this secret, is also well presented. Whether or not this book is a factual account of Nazi secret weapons development, or merely an elaborate mixture of fact and fiction is irrelevant to it being a very interesting read - even if you believe it or not, and I recommend it on that basis.

Having read many books on the Breakup of Yugoslavia, I have to say that this is among the best and is certainly the bast at giving the general, overall picture as to what happened (all the other books I liked mainly dealt with specific events or viewed from a particular angle). It is also one of the easiest books to read and is intended for the mainstream readers as opposed to some which really go into the finer details with huge footnotes, written more like a legal paper than a book!. I would recommend this book to anyone curious as to what happened during the late 80's through to the mid-90's in the Balkans, especially those who know little/nothing about the topic already! I found the book ultimately unsatisfactory, in that the historical background of Konigsberg and East Prussia occupies 85% of the book; the crucial part of the book(the reason why most people would buy it) dealing with the Russian onslaught on East Prussia and Konigsberg in particular is not covered in any great depth.The author does not identify military units in any detail, so as a piece of military history, it fails. The civilian experience is also not dealt with in any great detail, the actions of the Kriegesmarine are sketchily detailed. Even the Russian side is barely explained. It leaves one with a desire to seek out other histories about this relatively little(for us in the West) known period.
