I don't think many people will want to read this book for fun, although, as something to dip into - perhaps in the spirit of its original publication, as a periodical in monthly chunks - it could be just about amusing. Some readers may be interested in Irving as a forerunner of other American writers, or perhaps in what this book has to say about the relationship between English and American literature in the early nineteenth century. If so, you will find that this edition (Oxford World Classics) is admirably edited, with detailed and interesting notes and an illuminating introduction by Susan Manning. MOON guides are not widely available in the UK and are very much written for a US audience but in my view they are THE best guides to the USA. The authors know their subject, have real enthusiasm and humour and I have found the guides unfailingly accurate. THe introductions and background information on history, geography etc are always interesting and written by Americans for Americans they can tell you more than other guides aimed at an international audience. The maps are also excellent (unlike Lonely Planet) and you get a real insider's view of the area. This guide covers Washington DC as well and is perfect for someone visiting Virgina and adding on DC for 2-3 days.

"His Excellency" by Joseph Ellis, is about George Washington, but instead of focusing on what he did (Washington actions, we are assured, are widely written about elsewhere), it focuses on his psychology and presents his actions in terms of his psychological make-up. It's a clever book, because of its' emphasis, and I learned a great deal about Washington that I didn't know before. I'm not sure, however, that it's necessarily the best place to start with Washington, if you don't know much about the guy. I'm English.
