This is the definitive account of the campaign in France and Benelux 1940. Thoroughly researched, myth-busting, superb analysis, easy to read in spite of its academic complexity. Award winning in both Germany and France. Recognized as the official historical account in Germany.

Unbelievable.

One of the first American pilots with the Eighth Air Force to arrive in England was told by RAF pilots ". . . . . . we would get our butts blown off if we persisted with daylight bombing. We were told that the Luftwaffe was highly skilled and that their 88s were very accurate, both of which were confirmed later."

In contrast, American armchair theoreticians said daylight bombing by heavily armed B-17s that flew without fighter escorts could smash the Luftwaffe and cripple Germany. They were incredibly wrong. Mistakes in war are paid for by the combat forces, and in World War II the Eighth Air Force had the highest casualty rate of American forces. Of the 210,000 aircrew, 26,000 were killed - ... A great read that fills in the blanks left by the Band of brothers book and tv series.
Political correctness takes a back seat and Bill and Babe say it as it was.
I felt that more could have been detailed about the different firefights which occured (especially on the Normandy drop.)
Bill touches on this very lightly by saying he was named Wild Bill after killing many Germans on D Day.

However, he doesn't go into any more detail other than admitting that he 'executed' two SS soldiers (on D Day) who had surrendered to him with a bullet to the back of their heads. (He then goes on to say that he has no regrets and feels no pain or sorrow fot killing them. (How many people would admit that in their book ?)

29.The Struggle for Europe (Wordsworth Military Library) by: Chester Wilmot

Books : The Struggle for Europe (Wordsworth Military Library)
A fantastic account from the BEF evacuating from Dunkirk to the fall of the Thrid Reich. Wilmot is so well balanced, criticism is aimed where due and not through national bias (not sure if this book will appeal to many Stephen Ambrose fans - not many eagles soaring on the wings of democracy, freedom and liberty for all here, not even a mention of Easy company winning the war all by themselves), his objectivity places this book amongst the very best histories of the campaign in North-West Europe.

A great read, not an overly easy or flowing read, but such a rewarding and insightful history which has, and will always stand the test of time.

I loved this book and found it acutely interesting. The facts and details of the book I found was overwhelming and some of the script was very harrowing. My Papa was a Royal Marine Commando in the 41st regiment and this book helped me visualise a time in his life he found extremely difficult to speak about. The book made me feel proud and privledged to have been the grand-daughter of one of these brave souls and my thoughts go to all the young men who never made off those beaches. I feel it is so important the we as the future generation of Britain take time to try understand the fear and sacrifices these men and women made on our behalf and how different all our lives would have been without them. They are a generation who is slowly fading away ... Read More:
