Books : The Boys' Crusade: The American Infantry in Northwestern Europe, 1944-1945 (Modern Library Chronicles)
This is one of the best books about the Second World War- any war- you're likely to read. Why? Because it's bitter without being cynical, incisive without being complicated, brutally honest without being maudlin and self-serving. Paul Fussell, who knows a bit about war (he's walked the walk), has written a book that stands as a heavy, much needed counterpoint to much of the High Street book-shelf bending history that, left unanswered, will leave this present generation doing a great disservice to the men and women who fought the war against fascism. The Boy's Crusade rightly puts the populist histories of Stephen E. Ambrose, Charles Whiting, Rick Atkinson et al into stark relief, exposing their hackneyed recycling of old myths and calumnies ... Books : Leakey's Luck: A Tank Commander with Nine Lives
In life there are men that always seem to be where the fight is thickest and most is going on. Leakey was one such man. Born to a poor family in Kenya he rises to become a tank regimental commander of the 5RTR of the famous Desert Rats in Northen Europe.

The entire book is interesting because he lived such an interesting and full life. It also shows well how commanders are posted to various units as they climb the ranks of promotion. For those with interst in WW2 military history both the personal account and successful introduction into each chapter by George Forty will show you how flawed the British Army's conduct of tank warfare could be to the end, since many of the tanks superior commanders had no real experience and were ... 90.The Struggle for Europe by: Chester Wilmot
2005-06
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Books : The Struggle for Europe
A fantastic account from the BEF evacuating from Dunkirk to the fall of the Thrid Reich. Wilmot is so well balanced, criticism is aimed where due and not through national bias (not sure if this book will appeal to many Stephen Ambrose fans - not many eagles soaring on the wings of democracy, freedom and liberty for all here, not even a mention of Easy company winning the war all by themselves), his objectivity places this book amongst the very best histories of the campaign in North-West Europe.

A great read, not an overly easy or flowing read, but such a rewarding and insightful history which has, and will always stand the test of time.
