I got this book when i was having my first baby, i was so nice to read a down to earth normal book (not that many out there about pregnancy) trust me i read every book going. Now i am having my second baby and i have read it again and i still laugh out loud. I have lent this book out to all my friends over the past couple of years who have been pregnant and they all agree its one of the best books out there for pregnant women.

Mary Seacole's reputation after the Crimean War certainly rivalled that of her counterpart Florence Nightingale but for a very long time she was a forgotten footnote in history, and this probably had a lot to do with the fact she was not a white middle class woman, but was instead the offspring of two races, that of a Scottish father and a black Jamaican mother.

She was a born healer and a woman of tremendous energy, she overcame official indifference and racial prejudice as she strove to prove her worth as a Nurse on par with Nightingale herself.

Seacole got herself out to the war by her own efforts and at her own expense, she risked her life to bring comfort to the wounded and dying soldiers; and became one of the ... Read More:

As soon as I picked up this book I was living in the past. This book really took me back in time....bringing back many long-forgotten and happy memories of the 1950's. It was amazing also how the author's training experiences mirrored my own... a highly recommended, entertaining read, very well-written that has you engrossed from start to finish

My sister & I are keen Wharton fans and having read the review in the Telegraph, I purchased 2 copies.
Well after about a month we both admitted to each other that although this book may be factually accurate, the reading was heavy going. So my copy is now at the charity shop after 2 attempts to get half way through it.

As with any book of this nature cat/animal lovers will move from tears to laughter and back again. Well written with a worthwhile reminder that despite the distress in losing a beloved pet it is more than repaid by whatever time you share, even if sometimes that is only short. A lovely book that any animal lover will enjoy

This is an autobiographical work in which the self-absorbed author likes to refer to herself as the world's first super model. Well, Suzy Parker, Twiggy, and Jean Shrimpton may well take umbrage at that, as they were super models who preceded Ms. Dickinson. Better looking and classier, they leave this author eating their dust.

This book is mildly amusing, at first, as the author cattily takes jabs at her former lovers, naming names. Let me tell you, Mick Jagger and Sly Stallone do not fare too well in this book. In general, the author talks about men in such a derogatory way that, if men were talking about women in this way, they would be called sexist.

The author routinely engages in trash talk, and some of it is ... Read More:

138.Testament of Youth (Penguin Classics) by: Vera Brittain

My mother having pressed me to read this book, I finally got round to it early this year. Thank God I did.

I cannot begin to put into words how much this book touched me. Vera Brittan must be an inspiration to all women; a strong and determined character who, despite losing almost everything to the War, did not give up. Vera Brittan was a young, ambitious girl growing up pre-war with aspirations to go to University (something uncommon for the day.) She succeeded in getting into Oxford to study English. Then the War came crashing into her life, and Vera's brother and friends get called up to fight. She herself finds her place, working as a nurse first in London, then abroad. Vera Brittan lost so much to this horrific War and yet still ... Read More:

I liked the story in this book however it is not the easiest to follow because the authors life story interchanges with his mothers life story every other chapter. i.e. one chapter is about his mothers life written in her words as if she wrote it, then the next his own life written in his words as if he wrote it, then the next his mothers and then his and so on... It got confusing for me after a while, and annoying when you were at a really interesting bit and had to wait a whole chapter before the story picked it up again.

I bought this book based on the positives reviews, however as much as I have enjoyed it, and the writer has the gift for writing and describing things, I would definitely not describe it as a book that is hard to put down. ... Read More:

This is an unusual book, in as much as the author seems more interested in writing an emotional story of a stressful childhood and eventual triumph rather than an biography. I agree with other reviewers - the chronology is confusing, and the accuracy of Phillis's autobiography on which it is based is questionable - her brother disputes some of the facts. We are told what her parents felt, although the author cannot possibly know. There is very little about the A-Z itself, and what role it played in in making London more accessible - it is intimated that all that was avilable before this were 1919 ordnance survey maps, but the illistration of the first A-Z cover states that it is larger than other similar street atlases. It is also difficult to know what Phillis's ... Read More:
