It is impossible, after finishing this beautiful book, to believe that Murasaki Shikibu has been dead for a thousand years - through her diary and poetry you sense a real human spirit.
The diary, and Murasaki herself, are even more appealing when contrasted against the grandeur and ritual of the Heian court she served.
The ceremonies, competitions, veneration of poetry and gorgeous colours and costumes are unbelievably vivid, intricate and fascinating.
Although the formality of the court seems alien to the modern world, Murasaki's observations give intimate glimpses of the characters of those involved, from Empress to serving-maid.
After finishing this book, you feel real regret. Read it and immerse yourself in a lost world.

The past is a fascinating land in which we all dwell at one time or another, and in My Invented Country, Isabel Allende discusses her relationship with the country of her birth, Chile. She crafts a wandering, wondering work of mystical proportions; discussing the influence of her colourful family (in particular, her grandfather) and the times in which she lived as a child. There is no narrative imperative in this work but this discussion of the spirit of the Chilean people and how they've come through a veritable patchwork of governments in the last few centuries is utterly enthralling.

What falls into place around you as you read, is a rich and vibrant land which the author admits may never have even existed and may simply exist in her ... Read More:

Sylvia Browne is such a brave and inspirational woman, I think everyone at some point in their lives should read this book. I learned so much from her. She talks in depth about her psychic abilities and her conversations with her spirit guide.. Francine. I would recommend it to anyone who searches for the meaning of life, who needs confirmation of their own thoughts about life after death... or simply wants a very good read! I am certainly going to buy the whole collection of her books.

Joyce Tyldesley provides us with a thorough examination of the evidence surrounding the pharaoh Hatchepsut. She discusses issues such as the disputed order of succession, the conspicuous over-use of propaganda by Hatchepsut to legitimize her power and the question of exactly who attempted to erase the name of Hatchepsut from the monuments and why. Her arguments in each case are based on a judicious weighing of the evidence and the reader is always provided with alternative interpretations from other scholars. Tyldesley systematically dismantles the prevalent opinion that many of the actions of both Hatchepsut herself and her stepson Tuthmosis were motivated by a deadly enmity. On this issue she suggests that Tuthmosis was relatively accepting of the co-regency ... Read More:

I read this book in two days and found it very uneasy reading, the reason being that there were too many inconsistencies and American type spellings as though it had been edited by someone outside of England , ie Moslem as apposed to Muslim.
There were many details that just did not add up like when she went to get married at The British Embassy. You cannot marry there, you can only get your paper work authorised and stamped ,then after days of paper work at different buildings being further stamped you finally go to an Egyptian office in Cairo the equivalent of a registry office to to get married . According to Jacky she did this in reverse which is not possible because without the go ahead from the British Embassy you cannot go to the civil ceremony , ... Read More:

My husband and I are planning to move to the country next year, so when I saw this book I couldnt beleive what it was trying to tell me.I had to read it. It was the most funniest book I'd easily read all year! I even had my husband rolling in bed laughing with me. Judy Rumbold attacked every single one of our reasons for moving to the country with vivid clarity, I especially loved what she wrote about country pubs, thatched roofs and garden machinary. but secretly i think it's all a ruse because she's still living there!
Fanatastic read - not for the faint hearted or easily persuaded
Putting all that aside if you still want to move to the country after reading this book, I say go for it! It's more than convinced my husband and I!

Now and again there comes a book, that when the individual finally finishes and lays it down, a moment of serious thought is required. This is one of those books. I know little about the White Rose and this book adequately serves the purpose. I now have nothing but the utmost respect for these people and what they attempted to do. One can't but help think, 'would I do the same in a similar situation?'. Read and respect.

I've never been to the USA, but I kinda feel that I might well agree with Sandi's astute and humerous observations. Thoroughly enjoyable and full of interesting facts, it is insightful and entertaining. I shall be re-reading it again and again.
