Her remarkable story is beautifully conveyed by Redworth's distinctive style of writing which is skillful and detailed, yet easy to follow and engaging. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in history.

There's an entire genre of 'moving to the countryside' books, what publisher's like to call settlement non-fiction. The books are normally written to commission, it's a genre I had never explored or read before I wrote my own book, which I suppose I have to now admit, belongs in some way to this genre. This is clearly one, and I haven't read it. So I who I am I to argue with the reviewers, hence the 5 stars. But if you do read this book, then try A PLACE IN MY COUNTRY: In Search of a Rural Dream. I'm biased, because I wrote it. Well and widely reviewed, it is sinking like a stone; there you go. I was so disappointed with this book, somehow to me it just doesnt ring true that this was written by a middle aged woman in war time, I would be interested how much of the authors slant was put on the originals diaries, everything is very much glossed over and the fact that in the introduction the author states that most of the original diaries are now unavailable, left me wondering... If you want a thoroughly good read of war time diaries look no further than the three books by Simon Garfield based on the Mass Observation Probject, they are absolutely superb and I think that is what has left me wanting more in this publication, oh well!

This is the autobiographical memoir of a young American woman, an actor in many memorable, high quality spanking movies. In any autobiography, the author will not, indeed can not give the whole truth, such as it is, and devotees of a practice that attracts both prurient interest and public disapproval may well be the least reliable in this. Particularly when the author admits to some earlier fabrication, as does Flynn in this book. However, the words ring (painfully?) true, and paint a credible picture of the events and emotions that befall a seasoned practitioner of the disciplinary art. He was held there, chained to a stone pillar, for ten years. In that time nobody spoke to him (his wardens were expressly forbidden to do so) and his food and drink was brought through a small trap door. After a few years he was a raving lunatic and after that, for the last two to three years he was there, completely catatonic.
