This book isn't really what you'd call an autobiography as some of the newspaper reviews etc indicate. It is basically a photo album of Judi's life, career etc. Its still a good book, but if you're into reading autobiogs you may be a little disappointed, as I was - I was really looking forward to reading all about her astounding career and life - never mind... I'll just have to look at the pictures instead.

The 4 star rating is an error on my part. This book barely rates a one star. When I read this book as a teenager I think I found it mildly amusing. Now, as an adult with children, work, worries etc, it's just irritating. The diarist is witty in a droll an complacent pre-war way that finds humour in the travails of dealing with 'useless' domestics. The main character oozes the preternatural arrogance of somebody who has little practical ability of any sort and doesn't care because she's used to dumping on other people. Anyhooo..... the book reminds me of the TV show 'Butterflies' (remember that?) which I also hated - well, i despised the drippiness of the useless main character. I'd recommend Barbara Pym for a more poignant interpretation ... Read More:

As a student midwife I am constantly looking for books about my career choice. Although this is from an American midwife, a country which has a different health care system it is still a wonderful read. Midwifery is all about caring for women and their families at a very important and special time in their lives, which is certainly the main focus of the book.
Highly recommended

I bought this book on Saturday morning & had finished it by Sunday afternoon- a quick, coversational read, very much like having Marianne stay over for the weekend (purely platonic, old sport) and listening to her hold court in yer front room as she lets slip secrets from the Top Table circa 1967-1969, her time spent on a 70s Soho wall and her various other dealings with Beats, beak and freaks. Absorbing and intimate, the book eschews the narrative approach of her earlier biog and goes for the more abstract, rambling flights of fancy one recognises from late nights staying up talking, drinking red wine & smoking too many cigarettes. In this format however, there are no red rings on the coffee table, overflowing ashtrays, lost voices or Marianne-inspired ... Read More:

This is a real escape into Beatrix's world, written in her style of conversation and beautiful facsimile style reproductions of ephemera and letters bringing her creations to life. Best of all is the facsimile of the private first edition of Peter Rabbit at the back, a rare publication to have I think. Adults love it as well as children.

77.The Journals of Sylvia Plath, 1950-1962 by: Sylvia Plath

Sylvia Plath manages to shed a brilliant light on her life and experience through this diary that is sometimes painful and that often paints her experience with a beautiful and poetic richness, color and brilliance. Daily events come alive with unexpected meanings and shades of feelings through her carefully constructed prose. In one instance she describes her experience, waiting in a car, with the rain drumming on the roof, near the ocean with such amazing clarity and such a striking portrayal of her sense impressions that the passage leaves one breathless. I don't think I have ever read anything quite like that.

I read this book shortly after finishing Ackroyd's 'Dickens' (1990 version). Tomalin's findings give a extra, sharper slant on that biography. Particularly the depiction of Dickens' death.

The accumulation of research and detective work go a long way to casting light on the elusive relationship between Nelly Ternan and the most famous English novelist of the 19th century.

It is eventually a sad - but all too human - story. And it did make me reassess Dickens' heroines and his approach to women in general. I agree with the author that Estella (from 'Great Expectations') is his most alluring female character.

Claire Tomalin has written a clear sighted, carefully outlined and moving/rather troubling history here. It certainly deserves ... Read More:

80.Dancing with Demons: The Authorised Biography of Dusty Springfield by: Penny Valentine, Vicki Wickham

It’s by no means brilliantly written - and often borders on the trashy - but Dancing With Demons provides more than enough interest for those who like their icons tragic. However, those who want to know more about the music behind Dusty Springfield are best advised to look elsewhere. In fact, the book barely dips its toe into the musical aspects of Dusty’s life (and, if the booklet that accompanies the superb “Simply Dusty” 4-CD collection is anything to go by, quite chronologically inaccurately at that), preferring to let us all in on the “darker” side of Dusty’s struggle with her sexuality, her fame and her alcoholism and drug use.

Is it simply unnecessary muck-racking to bring into the public domain the tragic, at times ... Read More:
