This was my first Austen novel and I really enjoyed it. Although at first, (being a woman of the 21st centruy!)I did find myself wanting to shout at the women for being so shy/well behaved all the time, I did remind myself it was written 200 years ago when things were different and found myself getting caught up in the writing. Once you read it in context it is very enjoyable with characters to love and hate and becomes a complusive read that you can't help but love

I really enjoyed this, found it much easier to read then any other Austen I have tried but that may be a result of getting familiar with the language. Once again Austen does not disappoint with the range of characters to love, hate, laugh at/with and those you just want to punch!! Another fabulous escape into a wonderfuly written world of romance and chivalry. Highly recommended!

A really good book on lesbian experiences. It helped me to come to terms with my thoughts and feelings and to see them as normal. It is a thought provoking book with some beautifully written, heart-felt stories. Well worth a read for ALL.

I had the pleasure of reading this book this weekend. I had come to the book expecting a poor man's version of Jane Eyre but though it is set in the life of a goveness, the story is much more subtle. It really explores what the life of a goveness what like. The descriptions of the brats that our poor protaganist is charged with the education of is spot on. (For anybody who complains about the children of today, take a look at this lot.) The isolation and the cruelties bestowed upon them. There is no dashing Rochester, no mad woman in the attic, no mystery to be solved. Just the reader and the experience. It was refreshing and heartbreaking. However, it need some ummmmph. Agnes doesn't take a stand, doesn't fight for what she wants and I found ... Read More:

Poor Uma. Drab, a dismal failure at school and stifled by the benign tyranny of MamaPapa in a close-knit traditional Indian family, she then begins to suffer from fits. Unsurprisingly, all attempts by her family to marry her off result each time in disgrace and instead she is groomed for a spinster life of domestic servitude. The poet needs no introduction. However, the translation is, as another reviewer stated, apalling. The iambic pentameter/alexandrine dilemma has led to some turgid translations, with padding words added in for the sake of metre.

Shelley's intense and acutely observed tale of love, war, and the ignominious fate of mankind is very much a novel of its time, with themes common in 19th century literature. The prose is elaborate, the descriptions vivid bordering on flamboyant, but her visionary predictions, portraying the plague that eventually topples civilization in a manner recalling the AIDS epidemic, are startling and remarkable, and conceivably an influence on the likes of Ballard, Matheson and Shiel. This supposedly dated novel of the apocalypse is a surprising, hugely enjoyable, and oft-overlooked gem from the birth of science fiction.

yes it is similar to other books about teenage life as a gay guy but theres a difference, its also got more then 1 culture unlike all the others, theres two main characters, one white and one asian (hindu)

me personally im asian and found i could relate to "Raj", i also found it informative on the whole "Vedism" section, who would have thought gay asians wouldnt be shunned upon many hundreds of years ago. its a surprise to me, and im not just taking this info from the book. i did research on vedism to clarify this for myself.
