If you've seen the adaptation of this neglected classic, then you'll already know the storyline. Suffice to say that the book is even better, because it fleshes out more of the secondary characters, such as Lady Harriet, the Squire and Lady Hamley. What makes the book such a delight to read is Gaskell's knowledge of human nature. One feels that Gaskell is a little like Roger, putting each character under the microscope, but analysing each fault kindly. The only character who doesn't get much sympathy is Mr. Preston, which is not surprising after what he does.

The relationships between family are what really power this book, especially that between Cynthia and Molly, the two opposites. Cynthia is inconstant and ... Read More:

Everybody loves Jane Austen and I cannot say I am any different. I know it sounds archetypal but she's my favourite writer ever. And Persuasion is, in my opinion, her best novel. Not that I don't like the others, but Anne is a more original heroine. More mature than the others and without some of their most annoying qualities. She is not self-important like Emma, or too good like Fanny Price.Only Elizabeth Bennet and her sister are as lovable as she is. And Captain Wentworth is a very attractive hero too. And as for secondary characters, Anne's father and sisters, especially Mary, are superb comic representations. Besides this is a story full of hope, one that tells us there are second chances.I have lost count of how many times I have read Persuasion, ... Read More:

45.Frankenstein (Wordsworth Classics): Or, the Modern Prometheus (Wordsworth Classics) by: Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley

Inevitably dated by style and pace, not to mention a somewhat heavy-handed way with analogy, this remains a touchstone for gothic and speculative fiction. Any horror comes purely from the internal dialogues of Victor Frankenstein himself, and from the taunts of his creation, rather than from the kind of vivid and bloody description that is the mark of more contemporary scary stuff.

Some interesting questions rear their heads about science and desire, inception and revenge, not to mention some seemingly unintended ones - for a book by the daughter of an early anarchist and an early feminist, both women and politics are surprisingly absent. But worth a look.

I had to read this for A Level English and at first I found it almost impossible to get into. A lot of it tends to go over your head but as you keep reading and get to the end, something just clicks and at the last 3/4 of the last chapter, you honestly believe it's a masterpiece. Upon several rereadings of the book, I found I understood more of it and it's just wonderful. Especially the last paragraph.

The story of Drew and Jay, drawn to each other at their first meeting but with Jay in a failing relationship, the book follows their relationship from its beginnings in freindly flirtation through to its climax on a luxury holiday where Jay and her partner and Drew and her date and all present. A real page turner where the sexual tension continues to build with each page Gerri Hill has done it again, a wonderful read.

I have not seen the TV adaptation of North and South and only picked up the book because it was a present. I'm so glad I did. I was spellbound within a few pages.
Elizabeth Gaskell, who I would also compare favourably with Jane Austen, is a brilliant writer. Her use of words conjure vivid images in the reader's mind.
Her characters seem real - they have their foibles as well as their strong points - and you can feel their despair and joy throughout the book. But the main reason why I enjoyed the novel so much is because it is a beautiful, old fashioned romance. The depth of feeling between Mr Thornton (the brash Northern factory owner) and Miss Hale (who has moved to the north after her father decided he could no longer be a clergyman) is incredibly strong and the reader ... I first read 'Jane Eyre', years and years ago, when I was ten. I loved it right from the start and have read it many times since, both as a teenager and as an adult.I can never tire of this book, I can never cease to be touched by Jane's desire to belong and to feel loved. I still find it extremely relevant today in the emotions so masterfully described by the author. Who has never felt an outsider? Who has never longed to be understood? Who has never wished their exterior aspect reflected better the beauty of their soul? Who has never suffered from feeling insignificant?
Charlotte Brontë has an incredible capacity for bringing life into every single character of her book. Everyone is extraordinarily portrayed in all their human frailties. No single person can leave you indifferent, ... Read More:

I watch this every time it is screened on tv too - probably dozens of times over the years - always enjoyable. Helps if `the jane` is just a little bit pretty, but of course she never is - that would be slightly defeating the object....
