I love Jane Austen. I know this is a cliché, but it is also true. I have read her six major novels again and again and I never have enough.
Sense and Sensibility is delightful in every respect.
It is full of as much drama as Miss Austen will ever deliver, with one of the heroines being at the doors of death because of unrequited love.
We encounter all kinds of characters: from the endearing but vulgar Mr. Middleton, to the horrible and deceitful Lucy Steele.
We also have three very different heroes: the romantic, byronic but ultimately dissapointing Willoughby; the unprepossessing but loyal Colonel Brandon and the slightly insipid Mr. Ferrars.
Definitely a must if you love 18th century literature.

I really don't know what I can add in review of this book, which hasn't already been said by the other reviewers - I was caught up in this wonderful novel from the outset, feeling somehow that the character of Richard got inside my head and I needed to - simply must - find out where he was going.

The story sweeps along through the Falklands war and the economic fallout which effected Argentina, through the changing 80's and ultimately leads to loss, as HIV & AIDS comes to the fore of the gay community.

The book was strange in the fact that nothing really happened and, only the final third of the story, picked up any pace. The rest of the book was told slowly, as if uncoiling. Nothing really happened and, yet, I couldn't stop ... Read More:

This book is a "must read" for all science fiction / horror lovers, as you will be able to, as previously pointed out by other reviewers, trace the roots and themes of the genre back to its beginnings.

The depth of the book, however, lies in the poignant questions Shelley raises about scientific discovery and creation. These issues are as valid today as they were at the time and have been literary motifs ever since. Shelley's discussion of these themes makes this book a classic, and as such it should be understood.

If you are only familiar with Frankenstein's monster through film adaptations, you will discover an entirely different story, depicting the monster as a tragic and unloved hero, who turns into a brute following the betrayal by ... Read More:

77.Mary Barton (Oxford World's Classics) by: Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell

Mary Barton is one of those books that sometimes makes for uncomfortable reading, because it is so sad and the era so bleak...however...it is also heart warming, full of characters that you truly get to know and love and necessary as an evocative history of that period. I would totally recommend it, however , not as a holiday book - it's heavy and needs to be viewed as such or it'll really get to you! superb

I first read this (actually that should say I was first forced to read this) in school over 20 years ago. I hated it. It was disected to within an inch of its life and I came to dread those lessons with a passion. What a shame that school can manage to put off even the most ardent of readers. Isn't reading supposed to be about enjoyment?

I picked this up a couple of weeks ago out of curiosity and read the first page while standing in the bookshop. Before I knew it I had read the entire first chapter and loved it. There is such humour in Dicken's books that would have been totally wasted on me as a 15 year old.

It took me a few weeks to read (hence the 4 stars as I had to concentrate more than with other books) but I thought it was just wonderful. ... Read More:

having read Come again and Come Together I was really looking forward to this book, however Amy and Jack are not entertaining enough to fill a whole book! Don't get me wrong there were some funny moments but overall it was a bit dull and I didn't really care what happened to them by the end of it. Persevere with this if you want but I wouldn't recommend it.

Oh I love this book!!!
I bought it when it was first published and read it in one go. When I finished I started back at page 1 straight away. Over the years I have reread it a a few more times and I know I will read it again. My copy is all worn and a few friends have read it as well and loved it. It is just one of the most moving and beautiful love stories ever written and I adore its thoroughness and perfect pace - lingering and going in depth and at times racing on and almost taking the form of a crime story. The final chapter has me in tears every time.
The language and prose in this book demands attention and focus so it is not a book to read a few pages of before drifting off to bed. But do read it! It is worth the extra effort!
