...with every turn of the page! I took this out of the University library one rainy afternoon early last year and couldn’t put it down. As anyone who has read Melville’s most famous work Moby Dick will know all too well, his writing is some of the most atmospheric there is; weaving gloriously detailed descriptions with deeply allegorical structures to deliver us a work that transports us head-first into the world of his stories. I’m not saying this isn’t a slight work, when evaluated in the shadowy wake of the aforementioned whale tale, but the central concept of various tales of the sea all collected in one slim, though delightful little book is simply great. It’s been a long-cherished dream of mine to write ... Read More:

The narrator of this story makes a point of mentioning that the name of the heroine is pronounced with a stress on the first syllable, like the male name `Anthony', with an `a' on the end. This is not an insignificant choice by the author, who in her youth dressed in men's clothes and called herself `William'. Not that this is a `lesbian novel' as such, but it is a very particular viewpoint, in which strong, androgynous women carve a civilization out of a hostile landscape often despite their menfolk rather than thanks to them.

There are some parallels with Owen Wister's The Virginian, where the narrator often leaves the scene to be replaced by the heroine, so that the two take turns in interacting with the idealized hero. Here, ... Read More:

...Spends more time winding up loose plot threads than it does actually spinning story. Being sandwiched inbetween two chapters of Ender's Game, for the most part, that's somewhat unsurprising, perhaps, but it really doesn't move the story on at all.

Essential if you follow the series, and care about what happens to character like Graff. Fills in the gap at the end of Ender's Game wonderfully.

Just don't expect it to stand on its own merits.

Strictly for fans of the series. Also completely incomprehensible if you haven't read the "Shadow" saga.

That said, I've enjoyed it. Genuinely worth the read. Wish it had a little more story, but that's for Shadows in Flight to wind up, I suppose.

The Snows of Kilimanjaro is among Hemingway's best works. Concise and yet incredibly condense in meaning, it takes the reader through the main events of the protagonist's life. It therefore provides an explanation of how the main character gradually deprives himself of his greatest dreams and ambitions, drifting away in a lifestyle that he accepts rather than chooses for himself. The character and landscape depictions are remarkable, identifiable with the classic Hemingway style. In this way, connections are allowed to be made between this particular work and others by Hemingway, such as, for instance, A Moveable Feast. The magnitude of The Snows of Kilimanjaro is to be found in the fact that it combines many of Hemingway's distinctive storytelling locations ... Read More:

I must admit I picked this up because of the cover and in my head it was a different book. A happy error!

A British Lady falls in love with an Egyptian Pasha in 1900s Egypt. Her great-granddaughter goes through the papers in her trunk and enlists a distant cousin's help to re-discover her story. The story is narrated by this cousin in 1997, reminding herself of the tales her mother had told her.

Knowing very little about modern Egypt, the book is set at key points in Egypt's history - turn of the century, with Egypt struggling for independence from Turkey and British influence and 1997, a turbulent year with terrorist attacks.

This is a very well written book. Atwood takes a double murder which is fact and writes fiction around it.It really held me. I actually got to like Grace, i wanted to learn more and more about her. It also leaves you not really knowing what to belive. Very good book.

I read Quite Ugly one morning and having run out of Rebus, Elizabeth George and Stuart MacBride books I thought I had found a crime writer to fill the gap
I started to read Country of the Blind and realised that Christopher is left of Gengis Khan!! Mr Brookmyre, you really shouldn't unbalance your books with so much left wing wrath, why don't you contact Gordon Brown - he needs a speech writer who has the sort of imagination you have - how are your economics? On second thoughts you couldn't come up with more dreamed up figures than he does!! I,ve bought one more of your books but I think I will take a rain check and give it to Oxfam!!

For such a simple story, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn often proves to be elusive for its readers. Here are some guideposts to look out for:

This story is told by Huck, and is not in the classic shape of a novel. Rather it is a precursor to Ulysses and Remembrance of Things Past, where other great writers attempted to capture the essence of our internal dialogue.

Huck is also hiding a lot from himself. You as the reader can quickly see through him though. He is trying to put a brave and positive face on a very dangerous situation. We all do that.

Huck also has to face himself before the book ends. What really is important? We can all spout a lot of moral talk, but what we do is critical.

If we lived in Huck's times, we would ... Read More:

Having said this is the best one I've read so far I know I've already said this about another one in the series. The cool thing is that I'm reading them totally out of order, so it's not as if the early works (of which this is one) are weaker than the later works. They are all great, and if you haven't yet read Montalbano you are in for a real treat, but there are some really outstanding moments in this one which for my money set it apart.

Montalbano is a wonderful detective, he's unswervingly uncorruptible in a world where corruption is rife. He is a Sicilian through and through. He is sensitive, loyal and a total swine to the women who love him. He is cultured and yet has the common touch. He is obsessed by his dinner and hates nothing more than when his ... Read More:

The unusual form of the book, each chapter relating to an element of the periodic table (not every element is included), to tell the tale of a chemist's life is highly effective. The content reinforces the form and the form the content to give a really high quality novel.

This was our group's favorite book by a modest lead over Lolita and The Master and Margarita. It is beautiful and moving and much more enjoyable than his good but harrowing Auschwitz tales.

Please do not be put off by the slow start - Argon is a very thin, rare gas and this chapter is one of the least engaging perhaps for that reason. Iron was most people's favorite element.
