Filled with striking imagery which makes up for the sometimes fragmented narrative. A sad tale which for me evoked a time and a place vividly. Perhaps a little overly 'literary' in places, I thought this was worth reading.

The Plague is about love, exile, and suffering as illuminated by living around death.

What is the meaning of life? For many, that question is an abstraction except in the context of being aware of losing some of the joys of life, or life itself. In The Plague, Camus creates a timeless tale of humans caught in the jaws of implacable death, in this case a huge outbreak of bubonic plague in Oran, Algeria on the north African coast. With the possibility of dying so close, each character comes to see his or her life differently. In a sense, we each get a glimpse of what we, too, may think about life in the last hours and days before our own deaths. The Plague will leave you with a sense of death as real rather than as an abstraction. Then ... Read More:

For some years, this intriguing novel has been a favourite of mine. Conrad leads the reader through a cunning series of plots and subplots, all the while creating an atmosphere of discontent and darkness. The distinct characteristics of Mr Verloc will interest and bemuse the reader for many hours along the main plot of this novel. Anarchy has never been so readily depicted in classic literature.

I first read this 25+ years ago. It was my introduction to Sven Hassel and I spent years searching out the old Corgi versions of his books in old bookshops and libraries.

This first book was written in the fifties after the war and contains the characters and elements of all of his subsequent books. I tried in vain to map out a chronology of events throughout his books but this book (and his others) are clearly works of fiction since the events and persons they describe often appear in different campaigns of the war at the same time.

That being said, it is hard to believe that Sven Hassel did not see some combat in WW2 since his descriptions of the Eastern Front and the camps are vivid and believable. I have read many books on the ... Read More:

Albert Camus, who will not call himself a philosopher, who will not "sit on a judge's bench" here, in his essay The Myth of Sisyphus, describes an "absurd sensitivity" he feels prevalent in this age. He is concerned with the principle that "for a man who does not cheat, what he believes to be true must determine his action." Consequently, how should someone, in finding the world absurd, find resource to continue in that world. Indeed, for Camus, "there is but one truly philosophical problem and that is suicide."
He clubs philosophers, scientists and religious acolytes together for their leap into construction and the world of their belief; "the leap does not represent an extreme danger, as Kierkegaard would have it. The danger, on the contrary, lies in ... Read More:

Books : A Little Magic
I bought this on the strength of another recommendation and wanted to reddress the balance. I am a fan of buffy-esque type novels and have read (and really enjoyed) the barbed coil as recommended by another reviewer. I also enjoy a regular dose of regency romance.

BUT I gave up on this book. I know reading is about personnel choice but this was truly dire. Sorry!

For as long as I can remember I have resisted reading Lolita. But because it is so often referred to as a "classic" I felt in the end I should put aside my prejudices and tackle it.

In many ways it is as I expected it to be. It is not a comfortable read and the unreliable narrator continually beguiles and tricks us. Humbert claims to love Lolita deeply but at the same time reveals the damage he is doing to her. The narrative is made even more intriguing by its attitude to Lolita - neither "innocent" nor "pure". Nabokov's language is superb - he revels in word play and the book is filled with literary allusions. The road trip across America is brilliantly seen through an outsider's critical eye.

I can see how Lolita has enthralled and ... Read More:

Breakfast at Tiffany's takes its cue from Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Both are short, beautifully written New York novels in which semi-invisible narrators wrestle with more self-indulgent characters, who take centre stage - and with whom the narrators enjoy ambiguous, shifting relationships.

In fact, the narrator in Breakfast at Tiffany's is so invisible he doesn't even have a name - apart from those the central character, Holly Golightly, gives him. The novel is a hymn to Holly - the narrator desperately wants to understand her, just as Nick Carraway struggles to understand Gatsby. Ultimately, though, hero and narrator are too different, with the heroes in both novels behaving exactly as heroes do: bolder, more inventive and almost certainly less stable ... Read More:

Fascinating read about the desperate position the French vineyard owners found themselves in during the Second World War. With Nazis determined to pillage the vineyards, the owners resorted to every trick possible to protect their assets. With experience of defeating phylloxera in the 19th century and the preceding world war, the vineyard owners had developed a knack of finding ways to survive. The book describes an eclectic collection of motives and actions that helped the wine industry survive occupation.

A slight downside is the purely factual account of events. This creates a book that is somewhat disjointed in places, with little attempt to create a story that holds the piece together. Fascinating historical journalism, but more rhetoric may have added to the ... Read More:
