In my opinion this is the greatest novel ever written, in that it is the most complete study of mental anguish and human suffering and redemption.

One caveat is that the only translation worth reading is that by Constance Garnett. It gets a lot of bad press by critics who claim it makes the novel sound very Victorian. I adisagree. I don't know which is the most faithful translation to Dostoevsky original text (I cannot read Russian) but this is so much more superior than the 'modern' translations. My favourite chapter (Part 4 Chapter 1) is totally ruined in the newer versions. And in many cases the new translation make the text unwieldy and inelegant.

Read this book, but do yourself a favour and read the Garnett translation. ... Read More:

An incredible story that is difficult to describe in a short few sentences. It was certainly a very thought provoking book and I really wanted to discuss it with someone else (excellent choice for a book club!). I was unsure about the ending but on reflection it fits well with the rest of the book and allows for the reader to ponder the story well after finishing reading. Dystopian fiction is not for everyone but if you are at all interested in this genre then this is a brilliant example. Once I'd finished this book I went straight out and bought "Oryx and Crake" - another dystopian story by Atwood.

What a book! When an epidemic of sudden blindness happens, the blind and those contaminated by them are quarantined in an old asylum where they are left to fend for themselves. This situation rapidly changes from quarantine into imprisonment and squalor as the blind fumble about - they befoul the corridors as they can't find the toilets, people get injured and die from infection. The army don't deliver enough food and everyone gets gaunt and hungry. When an armed gang of blind men take over the food distribution demanding first valuables and then women in payment, you are truly horrified where before you were revolted by the conditions. I can honestly say it makes you feel dirty.

But there is one person in the asylum who can see - the eye doctor's ... Read More:

Please, if you haven't read any of the novels in the 44 Scotland Street series, you should immediately go order and read 44 Scotland Street and then move on to Espresso Tales and Love Over Scotland before reading The World According to Bertie. Before making that decision, let me explain a little about the series. It began as a serial novel in The Scotsman newspaper. As a result, the writing is broken up into little vignettes that are loosely tied to each other by the relations the characters have with each other.

There's no doubt about it, Bertie Pollock makes this series work. He is the young (perpetually six so far), and blameless, example of what we all aspire to be . . . honest, fair, serious, humble, and considerate. Bertie has a problem ... Read More:

This was actually the first 'adult' book I read as a child - much to the shock of my grandparents!! I loved it and reading it again as an adult (understanding it that much more)has assured it as a favourite. I would recommend anyone to read this. It covers issues of race, sexuality, family, friendships and gender fantastically. The film version is very good and the book is a must to read.

So the general consensus seems to be that In Cold Blood is a masterpiece and Capote is a genius. Well I am sorry but I do not agree. In fact I think this is absolutely preposterous. The only way I can use the word genius in the same sentence as Capote is if I conclude that it was complete genius of him to make anyone believe this book is anything other than a badly written web of lies trying to disguise itself as something other than an unrequited love letter to a cold blooded psycopathic killer.
Let's look at what the book actually is. Difficult I know to do this because there seems to have been a completely new genre invented for this book. Why? I do not know, because the book is simply a novel based on a true story. Loosely based at that. Capote conducted interviews with witnesses ... Read More:

So, like most people, i used CGP notes while doing my GCSE's and found them mostly good (especially on the poem anthologies) - the humour though, while sometimes fun on many occasions got in the way of serious learning and the notes were brief when dealing with full length plays and novels.

Step in York Notes. For my A Level English i got one of these books for each of my set texts and they were massively helpful in prompting class discussions, writing essays and revising for the exams. They offer detailed chapter summaries and analyse them in an extremely informative way.

There's quotes too, maybe a little too few, but the ones they pick out are good and then at the end of the book you get a wealth of extra info relating to characters, themes ... Read More:

This is both a beautiful and an informative book; these two qualities do not always grace the same volume! Anybody who loves genuinely quaint, remote and simply curious little churches and chapels should savour this book by Richard Surman.

It includes features upon some of Britain and Ireland's most fascinating churches, with each one guarding its own secret(s) which could be anything from artwork, carvings, stories, legends or simply an architectural peculiarity. This book includes hundreds of beautiful photographs of the featured buildings, along with maps showing their location and a useful, illustrated glossary.

The secrets of these churches cover aeons of time and the book features examples like the remote Romney Marsh churches or St Cwyfan's, perched on its rocky islet ... Read More:

An incisive diatribe on conventional rationality, this is in my opinion (and contrary to the views of one didactic reviewer)one of the most profound pieces of literature. It perambulates the existence of a man who eschews a life of corrupted, arbitrary ideology in favour of social aseity.
The writer' s terse, matter of fact treatment of the narrative correlates perfectly with his subversive philosophy that leaves an indelible mark on any reader open minded enough to accept it. The idea that our actions should always be subordinated to and permeated by the unfathomable idea of a god and a fallacious, inequitous set of rules and conventions that distort the truth to suit people' s delusions is discarded with the kind of perspicacious execution the subject deserves. All religion and politics do is ... Read More:

As novel this book is undeniably flawed; the characters are two dimensional, the plot beyond implausible and every word of dialogue is a lecture. Which is why I give it only four stars.

The book is however a fascinating introduction to a philosphy that runs against the trend of current orthodoxy. When we are facing calls for greater regulation and control from our governments this book makes the case for less government; for letting the individual provide for himself (and, as an afterthought, for his family) and for government to "get out of my way". If, like me, you are attracted by such a philosophy, you will enjoy seeing the case made, and may see some arguments presented to help you argue your own case. If you disagree you should still read this, either to have your own assumptions tested ... Read More:
