This book paints an incredible picture of Spain in the 1930s; poor, under- developed and on the brink of civil war. A genuine, reflective, thoughtful tale, what an incredible adventure it must have been.

I wish I'd done it...

This maybe my favourite Sharpe novel so far. The return of his arch emeny Obadiah Hakeswill, love, an impossible task and hurt pride, Sharpe has his biggest challenge for some time. This was such a page turner I finished it in 3 days.... impossible to put down

Although "Paradise Lost" is one of the great works of the English language and should be read by every serious literary mind, I found the Penguin edition somewhat lacking. The notes are often brief and unhelpful, and the introduction, while well-written, misses certain key points of cultural history and context which are found in other editions. Overall, while this is a decent copy of the work for a first-time reader, I would recommend that the serious Milton fan find a more well-thought-out and better organised edition for further study and enjoyment.

This wonderful book is one of the most popular books written by Nobel prize winner-John Steinbeck.

It is also probably one of the most popular books in American Literature.

Set during The Great Depression,The story is about two migrant farm workers-George Milton(who is a cynical man) and Lennie Small(who is very big, strong but mentally disabled and reliant on George to look after him) and how they dream of owning their own piece of land.

Due to something Lennie has done(which was actually sort of a misunderstanding),the pair must go to a ranch in Soledad,California, to make money and escape the trouble they are in.

The book is an amazing tale of friendship and the heartbreaking thing George must do at the end to ... Read More:

Unusually the detective doesn't get his man - well not how you might think, anyway. The characterisation is gripping, but you need to concentrate and keep your wits about you. Can't wait for the next one.

Yes Hem deserves credit for his influence and descriptive story telling but this book showcases his weaknesses very well. Long boring passages of conversation which shed little light on the characters and go nowhere - he got better as he went on with coversation writing - , no real direction to the story and some lazy chapters. It only really gets going in 2 places - when he's dodging getting shot by the enemy, and the last few chapters.
He could write like no-one on earth but he WAS hit and miss.
"Fiesta", "to have", "old man", and "For whom the bell tolls" are better and his last few books (east of eden/islands...) - tho he was by now repeating himself - have their moments too..
read them 1st.

Whatever age you are, this book is sure to enjoyed by all. Some people will read it as a purely entertaining account of the childhood of an over-imaginative but loveable boy. Even today, Toms exploits reverberate with growing up, and the pure joy of being young and free. Sadly, in a world of growing regulation and overprotectiveness by parents, some of the adventures of Tom Sawyer will not sadly be enjoyed by todays average twelve-year-old, but are still sure to be understood and provide amusement to all young people.

It is difficult to compare this novel with Huckleberry Finn, and at times seems to be written by a different author. That said, it typifies much of Mark Twain, and the area of the US in which he grew up, without relating too much to the serious ... Read More:

Wharton uses the familiar trajectory of Greek tragedy: the seemingly unassailable hero/heroine free falling further and further down to death and destruction.

The cathartic effect works too, we feel both pity and terror as Lily makes bad decisions, is abused by friends and slowly but surely reaches her sad end. Each chance of happiness missed or cruel twist of fate deny her the opportunity to profit from her beauty, wit and intelligence.

Her fatal flaws are indecision and vanity. Like other tragic victims (Mme Bovary, for example) she is destroyed by an accumulation of ill-fortune, rather than one heavy blow.

Exquisitely written, observed with searing clarity and a dispassionate objectivity that is as pitiless as Flaubert and as acute ... Read More:

This was really very good but I wanted the author to spend less time on the background of Snowman and Crake and, without giving anything away, more on what happened to result in Snowman living in a tree. I could have read another 100 pages just to be able to know more detail.

The ending was unsatisfactory is a lot of ways but the ending also resulted in the book lasting longer than just the time spent reading it. I often pick my next book up straight after finishing the previous book, but with Oryx and Crake I closed the book and just pondered it for some time.

There are many unanswered questions that result from reading the book but I think that may be a trait of Margaret Atwood. This is the second Atwood book I've read. The other book left me feeling in a similar ... Read More:

This must be a contender for the worst book I've ever read. I read 'The Alchemist' by the same author largely because it appeared in the 'BBC 100 favourite reads' poll and was described as 'life changing'. I didn't like it, but thought this may just be due to the fact that the story is a cross between a parable and a self-help book, and decided to give Coelho another go. I shouldn't have bothered!
The story here is of a naive young Brazilian girl wanting to make some money by travelling to Switzerland ostensibly as a dancer, but soon becomes involved in prostitution. It's full of unbelievable scenarios and characters, some of which are frankly risible, mixed with a generous dose of half-baked adolescent philosophy. The heroine moves from an abortive S&M encounter to embracing it with full gusto ... Read More:
