I live in Belgium and I visited the Somme with this book this morning with my sons. The panoramas are awesome. The accounts of each stage of the fighting are well written and extremely informative. It brought our visit to life! I highly recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of visiting the Somme.

Being young and having only briefly covered WWII in history class back in my high school days i knew very little about it, other than the well known facts. That being until i read this book. Not only do you get detailed accounts of evaders but also of missions and events going on at the time. I now found myself contributing the knowledge into conversations. Some of the stories make you feel very proud and try and think of ways you can give people the same feeling when reading your biography in 60 years! By far the best book i have read this year.

This is a book with a massive contradiction. Any book with a heavy weight reputation is/should be dull, ponderous, difficult and unreadable by anyone without the word Professor in front of their name.

Instead Catch-22 is a stupid, silly, almost without pretension novel with a lot of substance beneath the gags. It took me 100 pages to get into it. I eventually realised that it's a silly romp with lots of second rate jokes and mediocre wordplay. It's the sort of book were characters get tripped up in the complexities of their own words, and everyone gets lost in their own conversations as they insist on ploughing on no matter how confused things get. After the penny dropped it became an enjoyable read.

It's not a totally easy read as I did ... Read More:

108.Hiroshima (Penguin Modern Classics) by: John Hersey

This is one of the most important books of the Twentieth Century. In these times of increased nuclear proliferation, sabre-rattling and political machismo - the human cost of such weapons is often forgotten. Hersey captures the immediate aftermath of the Hiroshima bomb with a detached humanity, showing us what happened without preaching to us. The results are all the more horrifying as we are left to our own inevitable conclusion. This is a book that everybody should read.

109.Spitfire Women of World War II by: Giles Whittell

This is one of the most fascinating stories I have read this year, no it's not highly technical (There are many technical Tours de Force on the Spitfire). Instead it concentrates on the politics and personalities surrounding the remarkable decision to allow women to fly combat aircraft in WW2, and the uniquely challenging conditions under which they did so, traveling from as far away as South Africa and Chile.

It also contains some superbly evocative photographs. (Even though the front cover shows not just a Spitfire & a Hurricane but an ME109! (Actually, it's a Spanish built HA-112, with a Spitfire engine!)

110.The War Years: Life in Britain During 1939-1945 by: Janice Anderson

Well illustrated with many photographs, the book offers a general, non-academic insight into life on the Home Front. Whilst the book covers the main issues of the period, it lacks personal recollections and the darker elements of the time, and perhaps takes a remote and rose-tinted view. Throughout the book there is a useful timeline of the important political and military events of the war, but these rarely get mentioned in the main text. For anyone with a serious interest in the subject, or a personal recollection of the time, this book will probably disappoint, but for the newcomer or school student it will provide an easy to read and engaging introductory text.
