Having been brought up on a diet of "Victory at Sea", "The World at War" and no end of stories and documentaries about it, I grew up in the 1960s and 1970 thinking that the war had rather been rammed down my throat. However, when I read "Carve her name with Pride", the story of Violette affected me like no other. I could barely think about it without a lump in my throat for a long while afterwards and for me this was *the* story about WWII.

Susan Ottoway's welcome new biography attempts to provide us new insights into this very courageous woman, it also dispels a few myths that have grown up. Though I was pleased to see that one of the most surprising tributes to her courage really happened.

During her fateful second mission, ... Read More:

What a delight this turned out to be! Thousands of irresistably silly facts about my favourite city, served up with humour and style and with the author's love of London shining through on every page. Over the years I must have bought a hundred books on London, good, bad and indifferent, but nothing like this and I couldn't believe how much new stuff Long has uncovered. New to me, anyway, and I suspect to most other readers as well. Ten out of ten.

I found this book very informative, I knew a bit about the Women's Land Army but this book goes into detail about the way of life for Land Girls. I enjoyed reading the personel accounts of former Land girls, I was also very surprised to read about the way they were treated by the goverment at the time.

This book is soley for the American market and bears no resemblance to European history - we decided to dispose of the book rather than pass it to our children!

Books : Sisters In Arms: British Army Nurses Tell Their Story
Finally a book that tells the story of the remarkable women nurses in WW2. From the first page the reader is immediately transported to the world that these women were part of. From their nursing training to the weird and wonderful details of their uniform.

If you think you know what nurses such as these did in WW2, then think again. The horrors they endured and the terrible situations they found themselves in will shock the reader and leave you with nothing but admiration for their spirit and bravery.

The book has plenty of quotes and paragraphs from the women themselves, and/or diary entries from that time. A few of the women are featured throughout the book, and the reader will find themselves taken vividly back to that time ... Read More:

This is one of those books I could not put down - every time I have read it! Simply outstanding. Enlightening to read the story from the other side. I understand there are some people who doubt it's complete authenticity. I found it absolutely gripping. This is a must for anyone reading about WWI. Probably the best book I've read on WWI.

I'm not much given to superlatives but this has to be the best Great War Unit history I've ever read, and I've read hundreds!! The immense wealth of information reflects clearly the huge research undertaken by the author. But it's not just that this is a war history; it's a social history of a capital city and an affectionate look at the trials and tribulations of a football club in the early years of the last century. Each of these 3 strands could almost stand alone as a separate work, but the author has woven them together with great literary skill which conveys his deep love of his subject. I defy anyone not to be moved by this awesome work

Much to the embarassment of many, including his superiors, Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty rescued many from faschism and certain death in Rome during World War II. He did it all with a twinkle in his eye and a sense of humour that kept him sane throughout it all.

A man who is largely unrecognised in Ireland. I wonder if he would like the idea that he has a commemorative grove of trees and a poem dedicated to him by Brendan Kennelly. He was never a man who sought fame, just a man who thought he was doing a job, the job he became a priest to do and that it was only right to do it as best he could. With co-operation of many people around him he ensured the survival of many.

A touching portrait of a man who should be held as an example to ... Read More:
