Nine Lives is a book that once you pick it up you dont want to put it down because you realy get a feel as to what it must of been like during air combat. The excitement, concentration and the fear. I found Alan Deere to be a very likeable character who not only shows immense courage but humility too. If your an aviation buff and want something thats not too detailed then I'm sure you will find this book an enjoyable read.

Carius served in several tanks throughout the war, from the small Panzer 38(t) to the Tiger I and briefly, the huge Jagdtiger. He fought against the Russians and the Americans, although the majority of the book is mainly concerned with his 'Tiger' actions against the Russians. It is an interesting book for anyone who likes personal accounts of armoured warfare during the Second World War.
Personally, whilst I enjoyed the book, I thought it was a bit too sanitized for my tastes, as regards his re-telling of the various actions. He does not go into great detail about them, perhaps in an effort not to seem to be gloryifying his many successes, but I felt that in reading it, I was never really 'there' with him, if you know what I mean.

Continuing the thread begun in Hidden Lives, Simon Garfield offers selections from the Mass-Observation Project diaries of five people caught up in the preparations and then the beginning of the infamous Blitz. The uncertainty, the anger, the fear; it's all here and it leaps off of the pages in a way that keeps you turning them.

Sometimes the diarists are not particularly likeable - you encounter racism and defeatist attitudes at certain points. But that is something that makes this volume particularly interesting. Knowing that these pages are going to be read by others, the diarists are still painfully honest in their fears and their prejudices. Very enlightening, and highly recommended, especially as a companion volume to Hidden Lives.

...The book reads quite like a textbook, but contains many interesting facts and hypotheses as posed by scholars. His views are fairly even-handed and he presents all sides equally, and in a well written prose. If you are getting this, you must get the companion too, as this often provides graphical representations as well. An Excellent book. There are a few places, for example the propaganda issue, where not all topics are covered in as complete a detail as possible, but the book is great for students for material, and references.

This book - in conjunction with some secondary literature and other NOT RANDOM situ texts - is one of the few which can come to revolutionise your perception ALL THE WAY DOWN. Of course : it is obscure and relies on a familiarity with alot of marxist terminology - but it bares, and demands, repeated readings which demonstrates how these concepts have alot of life in them! If I was to formulate its thesis then today it would be : you are always watching others do things instead of doing something which would exceed the gaze of another watching you. This is the road towards de-reification et al...

I'm not a European. I came over to the UK to study. Therefore, you can say that i have almost zero knowledge about European history.

I have read more than half of the book now. I have to compliment the author for his ability to make European history fun to read. It is true that almost every page could make you laugh-provided that you know at least SOME european history beforehand.

There are a few problems with the book:

1. Out of 406 pages, there's only 1 map of Europe on the first page. No photos, no pictures, no other maps to illustrate the events written.

2. The author attempts to SUMMARISE everything happened in europe into 1 book-which is good for people who knows some history beforehand....but for a ... Read More:

I think this book was quite interesting and made me feel very sad at the end. It is good but it also is not very engaging and it was rather boring in parts. I bought it after studying it for A level English and even though i thought it was ok, it is not one of the best books that i have read.
