This excellent book will fascinate a wide range of readers and should help local, social and family history researchers.

Simon Fowler looks at the whole experience of the pauper in the workhouse and clearly explains the reasons why they were so treated.

The author's style is excellent, his narrative is easy to read and is quite often amusing with some very useful and humorous anecdotes that make it different from other titles on the subject.

Although the workhouse often had a bad name, which was not helped by a number of scandals in the 1830s and 1840s as well as novels such as Oliver Twist. Some good often came out of it and, as the author points out, many children did in fact receive a better lifestyle ... Read More:

If you're looking for a way to explore Spain from within your own house then this book is key. It provides a surprisingly in depth, if a little mistake-ridden (publishing deadline closed in too quickly?) work full of incredible detail, although never boring. It takes you through most aspects of Spanish life from the Catalans to the PP. A great buy, if you're really interested, but not ideal to 'dip' into.

My friends and I have created a new genre for this book -- creative non science fiction. This is a wonderful book; check your assumptions at the door and enjoy a speculative masterpiece. If nothing else, you will know more about the SS and Hans Kammler than you would otherwise. Did all of these events happen? Well ...

I am a voracious reader of anything to do with the lives of ordinary people during and immediately after the post war period and this is an absolutely fascinating book. It feels as if you are looking over the shoulders of the people writing the diaries and these diaries (by modern standards) pull no punches. Much of what is said is both politically incorrect (and hooray for that) and especially, with the opinions about Jewish people, deeply upsetting and disturbing.

That said this compilation gives a compelling picture of what life was like in the immediate post war period, the ongoing dreariness of every day life with food rationing getting worse rather than better. The sheer difficulty of replacing the most ordinary articles, the tiresomeness ... Read More:

This is a very useful book which I purchased because I was teaching the QCA module in Year 2 which dealt with Famous events. it linked into work about our capital city and has a useful section about Samuel Pepys and his diary. A good sized book with excellent photos and nice, large print. Worth the money.

`History provides many examples of a British Army being asked to operate under appalling handicaps by the politicians responsible for British Policy, but I doubted that the British Army had ever found itself in a graver position than that in which the governments of the last twenty years had placed it.'

Maj Gen Noel Mason-MacFarlane briefing the press, 15 May 1940

So opens Julian Thompson book on the Dunkirk Campaign, the title is a bit misleading since it covers the whole employment of the BEF in that forgotten campaign of 1940. Julian Thompson rightly points out that within twenty years the best-trained, best equipped and best-command army went to within a hairs breath of total defeat. The army that in 1918 was at the height of its ... Read More:

This is a very concise chronological accout of the Revolution of 1917. The book deals well with the context of the situation of Russia, detailing the failings and popular views of the Tsarist regime. It goes on to detail the events of 1917 and the eventual Bolshevik Revolution in October. Without getting bogged down the book introduces the various ideologies of the factions contesting power, as well as a brief introduction to the main figeures, especially Lenin. The book is good a platform from which a full study of the doctrines, ideologies and impacts of the Revolution can be made.

The author has produced what is surely the last word in explaining the rise and fall of Nazi Germany. This is an economic history, and this allows the real story of the Third Reich to be told. Like all history, the prosecuting of war really depends on the ability to raise and sustain a war machine - this has been the case for most of history. By concentrating on this fundamental fact, the book clarifies the actions of the Third Reich and it's leaders. Essentially, Germany in 1920 had the choice of either accepting it wasn't a major power and becoming a satellite state of the US, living as an exporting economy, or going down the road of war and becoming a world power and exploiting Europe as a conquered empire. Many in Germany at the time refused to accept the former, ... Read More:

In May 2006, Andrew Robertshaw and I stood in Avril William's Ocean Villas tea rooms at Auchonvilliers. Andy told me the story of a British Soldier whose remains had been discovered at serre in 2003, and that amongst his possedcions were coins from Jersey, my home. Whilist everyone might not be lucky enough to be informed and inspired by the man himself, this book will run a close second. No Man's Land groupfirst came to genral notice because of the TV programmes Finding the Fallen and Trench Detectives. This book details the groups objectives and takes the reader through the life of a soldier in the trenches on the Western Front of the Great War. the book starts with a good basic explanation of archeological techniques, the relevance of finds and how they can support the historical ...
