`The Frightful First World War tells you all the horrors and hardships of the war that was meant to last for four months...but ground on for four grim years.'

The usual Deary humour flows through the 136 pages packed with facts, written in a variety of fonts and full of black and white illustrations and cartoons, from Martin Brown.

`Want to know how sniffing your own pee could save your life in the First World War?'

For Love and Courage was a very moving book, one that was difficult to put down. Ther conditions the soldiers faced in the First World War were brought vividly to life through the letters of E W Harmon to his wife at home. I would recommend this book to any reader, not just as a thought provoking piece of literature but also as history lesson.

Nigel Knight's book is an incisive critique of Churchill and his impact on the country. It goes far beyond just the war and has fascinating insights into his often negative and inconsistent actions, which for too long have been glossed over by biased historians. I found it to be a terrific and original read.

Well firstly, lets not give a product an average review for something it patently doesn't pretend to be. The Baker atlas has always purported to show the 'current' rail network, and has never depicted closed routes or rail formations abandoned to nature (the book makes this clear in it's introduction). As such, the review by 'Essex Boy' which bemoans such omissions is rather akin to suggesting you shouldn't buy a spanner if it's a pair of tweezers you are after, and marking the product down because you've given yourself a black eye whilst attempting to wrench out your eyebrows!
Of course, like Essex Boy, I don't rate the atlas THAT highly either, but that's because it's not actually particularly good at what it claims to be on the tin. ... Read More:

Having always regarded Ray Mears as an overgrown boy scout I started to read the book with some apprehension (why did his chubby face have to feature on the cover?) However after the first few lines I was hooked on the story of these true heroes. Mears gives a superb, detailed account of the build-up and action in destroying the heavy water stocks held by the Nazis at Rjukan. The account of the second, possibly more important operation, to destroy the ship that would transport the replenished Heavy Water stock to Germany seemed a little rushed and not so detailed, but I guess he was limited to the size of the paperback. In my opinion a book not to miss!

This book is simply amazing. The first chapters describe the development of machines and tactics that later on played important part during the Battle. It makes the whole book much easier to understand. From Home Chain to fighter planes, from vic formation to German tactics - it gives you lots of details. Later on the author describes the actual combat action, aims, targets etc. In later chapters you will find info about accuracy and effectiveness of pilots. It shows how aces differed from regular pilots.
At the same time it is a book that you will be reading very quickly and still wanting to go a little further. There's no time for boredom.
The book is a general description of events of the summer of 1940. Dont look in it for a detailed ... Read More:

Having read the 4 war memior books I then read this compressed version and relived the war according to Milligan. The man is a genius!! Although seemingly trivial you become aware of the effect war has on a mind. All the favourite/funniest stories are there and for those of you who want a quick introduction to the mind of Milligan this is the book to read. Well thumbed I am now on my 2nd copy. A book you can read and re-read and still find bits you missed before.

I finished reading this excellent book yesterday. I was slightly dubious about it at first, with the subject matter being what it was, but far from it being an out and out grime-fest it proved to be an insightful and well written social history of the very late Tudor and Stuart periods.
The text gives you a really good impression of wha life must have been like for 'ordinary' folks in these times and all the grisly, dirty and unhygienic things they were exposed to.
There is reliance on the work of Diarists and Social Commentators of the time and they prove to be helpful and amusing.
Thomas Tyron in particular stood out to me as a particular joy - with his neurotic and obsessive ideas (but in actual fact they turn out to be rather ... Read More:

The VSI series doesn't always work for me. If I invest time to read any non-fiction book, I expect it to better than a few internet articles.

This book is a summary of facts with a few interesting angles that cover the geo-politics and strategies mainly from the Western perspective.

But the problem with some of these VSI's is because they are so short, the authour doesn't have scope to include some real meaty stuff or delve into their own opinions.

It's just summary history, but a good Wikipedia article is the same!
At 167 pages, there's at least 4 hours reading for me. So if my objective is just to get information and an education of the cold war, are my better off going for this VSI or to Wikipedia or google ... Read More:

I was so disappointed with this book, somehow to me it just doesnt ring true that this was written by a middle aged woman in war time, I would be interested how much of the authors slant was put on the originals diaries, everything is very much glossed over and the fact that in the introduction the author states that most of the original diaries are now unavailable, left me wondering... If you want a thoroughly good read of war time diaries look no further than the three books by Simon Garfield based on the Mass Observation Probject, they are absolutely superb and I think that is what has left me wanting more in this publication, oh well!
