Only when I read this book did I discover that Capa's original ambition was to be a writer, not a photographer - and it shows.

A hint of his talent is on display in the very short chapter he wrote in the middle of "A Russian Journal", but here he has the opportunity to let rip, and the result is a fascinating book, which often surprises with its humour and deep compassion. I read it in a single sitting.

The book describes not just the D-Day invasion, but also campaigns in North Africa, Sicily and southern Italy, as well as the charming, comical (and largely factual) romance he had developing in London at the same time. To label it a mere "war book" does not do it justice.

Apparently the book was written ... Read More:

This account of hop pickers from East London makes for good reading ( especially as the Author talks with former pickers & used to go ' hopping' as a child .)
However , as with the Author's other accounts of East End life , I found it slightly biased towards the ' Salt Of The Earth ' East Enders . The pickers were not always welcomed by the locals in the Kent villages & speaking as someone who has Cockney blood in my veins , but was brought up in Essex , I must admit that I remember East End visitors to Epping Forest as rather rowdy & lacking respect for the area !

Nonetheless , a very readable account with plenty of humour & some very tragic moments .

I was impressed with clarity of the layout, imbedded pictures and the quality of the paper. I very much enjoyed the book. I will recommend it to others. The author clearly has done a lot of research to tie up the family history aspects with those famous and crucial events. Access to the official records and those held privately and in museums has yielded some good quality material. I found it quite interesting to note the comments about the film and the other books and the way that mistakes had crept in and never been corrected. The author is to be congratualed on this book.

This is an excellent biography of Guy Gibson of which the Dams Raid is only a very small part of the book. The book covers the life of Gibson from birth to death. The story of his unhappy childhood from a broken home, his tense and failing marriage, his relationship with his men, which wasn't alway the best, particularly the ground crew. His life wasn't easy but through his determination he was noticed and came to lead the raid that was to make his name. Some of the book covers his tour of Canada and America and his dabble with politics and selection as a Parliamentary Candidate. The story of the making of the Film "The Dambusters" starring Richard Todd was good, including the "Spooky" incident involving the dog that was to play the part of Gibsons dog.The ... I've been waiting for this book, or something like it, to come out and I was looking forward to reading it.

Hamish Ross set out to write a correction to the previous works on Paddy Mayne and to an extent he's succeeded in this. I thought it was a passable enough biography, but sometimes there was just too much attention to detail and it interfered with the narrative. For God's sake, who needs to know who handled what bit of paper in Cairo in 1942, for example?

Taking sideswipes at other authors' work on a regular basis throughout is also irritating to the reader and only needs to be done once.

However, those are just minor points. Of much more concern, to me at least, were two main things; the disjointed flow ... Read More:

This is a quick read. It takes the form of a diary, although it was written after the war. Knoke was a high-scoring Luftwaffe pilot. He fought briefly in the Battle of Britain, and then on the Russian front, but the majority of his victories were against bombers and escort fighters during the Allied bomber operations against the Reich in 1943 and 1944. At first he approaches this task with gusto. He comes up with a scheme to drop time-delay bombs onto the American bombers, and eagerly awaits the introduction of Me262 jet fighters. As the war continues his comrades are shot out of the sky, or crash in accidents, and he is frequently ordered to send his last half-dozen Messerschmitts against thousand-strong bomber formations, guarded by Allied fighters. He is shot down several ... Read More:
