Victor Klemperer was an academic and as such could be described as foolhardy to keep a diary in a time of such oppression and terrorism. But I fear that he was just a man who had to write down all that happened to him because it was just his nature. Thank God he did write it down. Such contemporaneous notes mean that no burnishing or filling in of details with half truths when memoirs are written long after the event. These diary notes come out of the page and leave one in dread and fear. The reader sees almost more than the writer, he was almost too near to the action. to see what would have happened to him if the diaries were found. A book purchased for my birthday and read a week before!! I just couldn't put this book down..A very enjoyable read. I am always interested in the lives of the hebridean people and this being a story I already had some knowledge of, I just had to take a look. Once again, the style of writing kept me thoroughly absorbed (woe betide anyone ringing for a taxi through my company while I was engrossed!!) This book contains humour, sadness, defiance and innocence. The SS Politician is a legend, along with the people who made her a legend..the islanders, "rescuing" and "saving" the whiskey and goods from the Polly, thinking they were doing no harm. Roger Hutchinson tells it as it was, which, in my opinion, is far better than watching the glamourised film version. ... Read More:

Read this in two nights -yep its a cure for insomnia. the book is a over detailed discription of a mountain climb wraped up in a lax P.O.W. setting the introduction even compares it to "the long walk"-belive me this is no long walk

The book is exellent value with good pictures and the story is never dull. I expected Hannig's story to be just training and fighting but stories of leave from the front, family life during the war, life as an instructor and fighter pilot at the front as well as his endeavours after the war held my interest so I could not put it down. It's not a very long story unfortunately and I sometimes wished more detail about co-pilots fates and battles fought.

I only wanted to know what the submariners life was like. This book does that job in spades. Each of the Patrols are retold, with the flaws and the positives of many of the paricipants. Its a very quick read too, I found I'd got to the end in a few days and wanted more.
