although undoubtably the author saw some close quater combat. 90% of the memoirs are "war from the command post"

The lack of actual combat detail leaves much of the book wanting
could almost have been written by a historian

How can you review a book like this? All I can say is that it I read it a couple of years ago and I've read it many times since. So often I'll be walking down the street or in work ands all of a sudden I'll remember a passage from the book and I'll just stop in my tracks.

Its beautifully written, the translation is excellent its haunting and almost lyrical you don't read it as much as swim through the words. Of course its disturbing - its effected me much more that any other holocaust literature I've ever read but I was able to read it without analysing every phrase and word somethig I've enevr escaped when readingf Levi. It made me feel humbled and sad but strangely refreshed. The women Delbo remembers and Delbo herself remind ... Read More:

There is a lot of discussion on whether or not this book is fact or fiction. I picked it up to read because it was a work of "Non-Fiction". But after reading it I am not sure. The book does have verifiable historical detail. But it is filled with complete conversations of the characters/subjects. It seemed to me to be more of a historical novel. Though I do not think everything in the book is accurate, Most of what he is attributed to have done is plausible.

The War Magician written by David Fisher claims to be a true account of the exploits of the illusionist Jasper Maskelyne during the Second World War. Mr. Maskelyne comes from a long line of magicians. And like his ancestor who used his magic knowledge to help T.E. Lawrence in ... Read More:

I started this book on the bus on the way to work and nearly missed my stop as I was so engrossed! Having said that I was so touched and taken aback by what I was reading that I had to put it down for a few hours to have a bit of an emotional rest!! I finished it last night and I really think that's its incredible. Its so beautifully written, in particular I loved the description, this part - "Their lives had been reduced to what could be held in their suitcases. Their faces were blank. They dared not look at the uniformed soldiers with the death's head on their collars who seemed to be everywhere." really stood out to me. The depth of description gives the book such a richness.

It feels like a rollercoaster when you're reading, you ... Read More:

I was hoping to experience, through Bernard Offen's words, something candid, direct and real about a life that has been lived under such utterly different circumstances to mine. In fact, I have received much more. Bernard Offen's story has brought alive for me not only the details of the horrors of his survival in Poland, but also something of what it is like to grapple with that experience years on. It has brought alive the process of healing that brought Mr. Offen to write the book.

It has been a privilege to have Mr Offen let me walk by his side while he remembers, and to let me see so tangibly places such as the house where he and his family first lived, and later Krzemionki Cemetery where he hid after escaping Plaszow concentration ... Read More:

I read this book by chance and with no expectation of anything beyond a predictably dull, ghost written memoir. What I discovered instead was a beautifully written evocation of a rapidly vanishing life and culture. Williamson is a master storyteller, and the simplicity of his prose belies his genius. His work casts a unique light onto the lives of a generation of travellers: their ballads, their poetry, their stories and their music. Williamson seems to stand within the continuity of a long oral tradition, one sustained by the very human values of kindness and mutual respect so lacking today. As the man himself says, 'stories was wir education.'
Hamish Henderson, the greatest Scottish folk-collector and himself a legendary figure, was quick to recognise ... Read More:

Raoul Hilberg is perhaps best known for his huge, scholarly history of the murder of Europe's Jews by the Nazis and their slavic helpers. This book delves less deep, but is just as horrifying. Unlike many products of the "holocaust industry", Hilberg's book gives space to both the killers and their victims, stressing the banal murderousness of the former and the cruel self-delusion and bravery of the latter. Where this book really shocks its readers is in the section on the "bystanders": the individuals, organisations and nations - from German neighbours of the oppressed Jews to the US and Britain - who did absolutely nothing to help. THAT is something that we are rarely told: that the Allies couls have done much to save the Jews, and without necessarily slowing ... Read More:

A wonderful and balanced study of the life of this charismatic archaeologist - warts and all. Fascinating detail about the nuts and bolts of inter-war Egyptian and Aegean archaeology, with its cast of colourful characters, and something of a travelogue as well. Having worked in the area as an archaeologist herself, Imogen Grundon was well qualified to write John Pendlebury's biography, and her book should appeal to both archaeologists and a wider reading public. The book is well researched - both in the written sources, and by field study. The examination of Pendlebury's final days on Crete in 1941 illuminates the way in which myths are born, and the problematic status of many conventional historical accounts.

What an absolutely brilliant read. Not one of those me me me me autobiographies but one that encompasses all that happened to those we owe so much to.
At time I felt I was with Leicester and others glad I wasn't.
Thanks to Anthony Leicester for taking the time to put his experiences in writing.

This short book about life in first Auschwitz, and then Belsen for a teenage Jew is both moving and engrossing. The author gives a first hand account of the horrors of the holocaust experienced by herself and her sister.
The writing is simple and undramatised. She simply wants to tell it as it was. She readily admits there are many events she has simply blocked out for fear that remembering might be too much for her. The story is told without horrific descriptions of the expeience. It is an honest and heartbreaking account.
The tale is told partlly through letters Anita wrote to her sister who had been lucky enough to be deported to England before war broke out. These letters reflect the desperate situation facing all Jews in the early 1940's who were vainly ... Read More:
