I recently bought this book from Amazon.co.uk and I can say that it is well worth a read. I know that there are loads of memoirs out there from soliders fighting in the various allied armies, but I jumped at a chance to read a book from the frequently under-represented German persepctive.

The author writes very well and I felt that he was able to portray the sheer terror of fighting on the Eastern front very well. One engagement in the early part of the book really had me on the edge of my seat as I wondered how they would repel an attack frmo Soviet armour without any ATG's etc.

Great book, great author, great read.

Eva and Barbie's story are not unique among the thousands of displaced persons at the end of WWII criss-crossing what was left of Germany.

However, what makes this book unique is the child-like quality and perspective in which this story of a 7 year old on the road with her older sister is brought to our attention. There are no great analyses or delving into too many thoughts; how could one also remember everything from such a long time ago except those images which have burrowed themselves deep into the human emotion.

It is easy to read, even more so in the German translation, and one cannot put it easily down, so transfixing are the real-life adventures of the two girls. The book certainly also helped put in perspective aspects ... Read More:

This is a very useful survey of Stalin's life and political career. It uses some of the new archival sources in Moscow, though not all of them by a long way, and it is easily accessible. But the prose is rather dull, and Stalin does not come to life, as he does, for example, in Sebag Montefiore's works. I also found the analysis disappointing. This is not a book that places Stalin in the context of his times, or makes his rise to power, his terror and his cult, understandable. For that it is better to go to Montefiore and to Figes's The Whisperers. But there are some useful details here.

Although not quite as good or anywhere near as long as First Light by Geoffrey Wellum, I couldn't put this book down and, as with Geoffrey Wellum's excellent book, was sorry to finish it. They both paint a very vivid picture of what it was to be a fighter pilot in run up to the summer of 1940. The wonderful freedom and exhilaration they felt during training, the edge of the seat descriptions of aerial combat and their extremely moving thoughts when one of them fails to return - in Spitfire Pilot there seems so many.

Spitfire Pilot ended far too quickly unfortunately, as did the life of it's author, which is what makes this such a poignant read.

This is a very interesting book - no doubt about that. My only reservation is that there must be an element of fiction involved here ; for example, how can he possibly remember word-for-word conversations (of which there are many), or the precise movements of people, sixty or so years later ? Accept this and it's good read.

The first time I read this book I coudlnt put it down (Apart from two incidents described that made me feel sick and forced me to close it). I have just finished reading it for the second time and although I still find it a great read I couldnt help feel parts of it were poorly written. Perhaps this is beacuse this isn't the full version translated from the german original or its just down to the skill of the author. In parts it reads like extremely grim fiction (almost cliche) rather than a first hand account of the front line and gives the feeling that the author has taken a few liberties here and there. After reading it again I have found myself asking questions about the validty of some parts. weather this is due to something being lost in the translation ... Read More:

I confess to some bias as I've read several of Vincent Orange's books on the senior Royal Air Force Commanders of World War II, in particular his book on Sir Keith Park. This can be seen as a companion volume and it is very good indeed. Striking a happy balance between the reader who has no previous knowledge of Air-Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding, head of Fighter Command, during the Battle of Britain and those academics like myself who are already great admirers'. Whilst this is not the first full-length biography of Dowding, that honour goes to Basil Colliers' book "Leader of the Few" published in 1957, it certainly is the most thorough, and covers aspects and periods of Dowding's life not touched by other authors, who mainly concentrate on the Battle of Britain period. ... This goes a long way to showing the bond and mutual respect that can be found between the VIP and his bodyguard. A great read with some great insights to the times

If you like adventure then you can't go far wrong with this book. During World War II, petty East End criminal Eddie Chapman finds himself banged up in occupied Jersey's prison. He is given a lifeline that he cannot refuse - come and work for German secret intelligence as a spy or face the consequences. Eddie opts for the former and is thrown into the grandiose world of a German spymaster. Now he is faced with the moral dilemma of double-crossing his country or the gamble of double crossing his new found boss. You'll have to read the book to find out which choice he makes ... I thoroughly recommend this book!

After wading through this and the first volume, I am still no closer to understanding how a monster like this could gain control of an advanced and cultured nation. I understand the how but not the why. Then again is anyone equipped to answer such a question? Is such a question even meaningful or answerable in the first place?
