Being a humble diarist myself, I am always fascinated by books of this genre and this is a very good one.

It gives us an insight into the lives of five very different people who kept diaries in the immediate post World War Two era. They were part of the Mass Observation project which was set up to record the lives of ordinary people in Britain. Simon Garfield weaves the five lives together.

The people featured never met, but they all lived through the same times of uncertainty when rationing continued despite the fact the war had ended. The great thing about these diaries is how they weave together discussion on national and international topics with the details of mundane private lives. By approaching the subject matter ... This is a magnificent "other side of the hill" book, describing what was perhaps one of the most terrifyng and courageous "jobs" of all the combatants of world war two. It's a vivid image of what was life about inside and outside a U-Boat. Great book of U-Boots.

I must admit I didn't buy this book from Amazon, in fact I have had it more than 25 years and I still enjoy reading it.

Gripping descriptions of bombing missions are interspersed with other anecdotes, often very funny and irreverant. You get a real feeling of what it was like and how Currie and his crew coped when others didn't.

Highly recommended.

I bought this book purely on the strength of seeing the excellent movie of the same name.I can honestly say that it is amongst the top ten books I have ever read.I,like many other people, have caught glimpses of what it must of been like to be a Jew during the second world war especially in German occupied countries.I have always thought to myself that it must have been a living nightmare.I was wrong,it must have been far worse than that.

Wladyslaw Szpilman describes here the true horror of life as a Jew in a truly descriptive but never angry way.His story is almost beyond belief at times and you wonder how the hell he survived. As he tells his story you are left wondering just how he managed to escape the nazi's time after time.Lucky? It seems ... Not to be bought if you are after details of battle as the author does not go through them in too much details, or in the amount of details some would expect. However a very interesting book for those like me who wondered how a kid ended up in teh Waffen SS, and his thoughts during the war.

I, too, was very impressed by this book. The author's integrity and honesty shine through as do his achievements at a very young age. I find it remarkable how very much his story is like the stories of the young RAF pilots on the English side of the Channel. An excellent read.

Hi !

I bought this book at Cardiff airport on my way on holiday and for the full duration of the holiday I was totally and utterly gripped by such a fascinating read.

I am not the best person at expressing what I want to say in text but I felt compelled to write something even though I know that I can never do William Ash or Brendan Foley (Author) enough justice.

The book brought out so many emotions in me...I laughed, I seriously shed a tear and I ended the book feeling so totally inadequate and humbled by one man.

I know that there were many men / women who sacrificed during the war but William truly is a hero. I hope that William feels proud to see that his memory will live on via the book and to know that I will ... Read More:

I found this book by chance. I think it is the most moving book I have read on this subject. Tadeusz comes across as a very strong person in the face of such horror. For someone so young he seemed to cope with it all in a heroic way. Sadly he fell apart in the end and could make no sense of it all even though he was free. He should be remembered more than he seems to be. I had not heard of him prior to reading this and I should have. He was in need of help just as much on his release as he had been in the camps. Maybe he needed more help outside as he was alone to ponder on the shock of all he had seen and realised that nothing had really changed in the outside world as a consequence of it.
