For anyone interested in the historical Oskar Schindler, this is an exhaustively researched account of the life and death of the man, focused around his WWII-related activities.

While the subject matter is of huge interest it is (at least up to now - first 150 pages) quite tiresome. The author goes into tremendous detail in everything that touches Schindler, directly or indirectly, and there are chapters where Oskar is not even mentioned! It would make a much more interesting, easy and focused reading if he didn't explain the whole Sudetan history and politics, for instance: sure, it is of historical interest, and sure, Oskar came from that background, but so much detail is simply off topic...

The problem is that the ... Read More:

'Sisters in the Resistance...' is by all accounts a wonderful historical documentation. Although, as the previous reviewer commented, the author's conclusions are lacking, the depth and number of different historical accounts makes up for this. Unlike many dry historical tomes, Weitz's work offers a personal perspective allowing the reader to relate to what these women went through, yet at the same time leaving one open to one's own interpretations and emotional connections.

The book documents different aspects of these women's lives through different chapter headings: for example the idea of being in love in the Resistance, Family ties during this time. This splits the narratives into a logical order and makes for easier reading.

I discovered an earlier version of this book and absolutely loved it. This full version was even more interesting since it filled in a few gaps left in the earlier version. I have not read a better book about life as a fighter pilot. Indeed it stands as one of the very best books I have ever read. He has a wonderful style of writing. You really do feel what it was like to be there. Hugely recommended.

A good personal account with lots of detail and stories of individual actions. Not read any from this particular perspective before and it gives an interesting history for these 'volunteers' in the Waffen SS. It uses the war diaries of the author - comes across as credible and not a post war embelishment.

I have to disagree with previous reviews, I found this book a chore to read and nothing like the other dozen I have read such as The Forgotten Soldier or most recently, Blood Red Snow.

I prefer books written in the style of those that concentrate on their experiences and of those in a foxhole around them. In Deadly Combat those around the author get rare mentions, they are simply faceless and nameless, frankly you don't care what happens to them.

Instead you get a rather dry overview of the combat as if written by a General using his memoirs and a map. I found myself skipping over paragraphs that appeared to be lifted out of a history book on German troop movements.

There are a few exceptions that describe close ... Read More:

There are a lot of ways you could approach the Heydrich assassination, and this book covers most of them. We start with an illuminating description of Heydrich, and how he came to be the man he was. We then get a description of how Czechoslovakia collapsed, and the different personal and political events that shaped the characters and actions of the Czech and German leaders. Then there is a good description of the different levels of political infighting among Czech and British politicians and intelligence officials which lead to the decision to send the assassins, despite the terrible danger of reprisals and the risks of failure.

We then get a very interesting account of the assassins and their background and training, for what everyone expected ... Read More:

87.The Hiding Place (Hodder Christian Paperbacks) by: Corrie Ten Boom

Books : The Hiding Place (Hodder Christian Paperbacks)
This is truly a life-changing book. I first read it in the early seventies and have re-read it many times since. Truth and wisdom shine through these pages, which address the question of how you can find it in your heart to forgive those who have wronged you. Opening herself to the love of God enabled Corrie to do things which (humanly) seemed impossible. She and her family suffered terribly at the hands of the Nazis but there is no bitterness in her book, only sadness and hope.

Finally! The memoirs of a truly great man. For those of you who, like me, can remember back, there was nothing more interesting and entertaining than watching Raymond Baxter present Tomorrow's World! Really takes me back...

That's just the tip of the iceberg, though. Here are the reminiscences of a truly special man - someone who flew Spitfires during World War 2 (all of which is documented here) but also went on to have an illustrious post-war career. There are some superb anecdotes here and it is written in a very approachable style. I found it particularly easy to get into and had to read it from start to finish. A real page turner!

There are some lovely images contained within and the only negative I can say is that it was a crime to keep ... Read More:

This is the first major biography of Ataturk after Kinross's 1960s opus. Unlike Kinross - whose book has been called hagiographical - this one deliberately approaches the subject with from a critical viewpoint. In places, this is apt, and leads to a better understanding of the consequences of certain actions. In others, it appears to place the author himself into the category of "those who can't, criticise". For that latter reason, I found the book to be vaguely unsettling, since all too often, the author starts taking himself and his criticism so seriously that the subject matter gets obscured. In addition, in an attempt to trump Kinross, Mango sometimes loses himself in cul-de-sacs; for example, Ataturk's love life is certainly interesting (and more varied than ... Read More:
