An excellent little account of the build-up of the war from July 1940 until January 1941. This was the time when bombs started dropping on London and the war became real for many millions of civilians.

This account is told from the point of view of Edie (Edith) Benson, who turned 12 as she wrote her diary. She sees the demolition of large parts of London by German bombs, the evacuation of many of her friends and the stress that the war causes her family. They build an air raid shelter in their garden and spend long periods of time sheltering from the bombs, food is rationed and school stops.

Suitable for quite young children, this book is an accessible way to learn about some of the human consequences of war.

As an ex-Naval Officer, now consultant in leadership, I couldn't pass this book by.

For many people, "military leadership" means strict hierarchy, shouted orders and unquestioned obedience. This book sets the record straight.

The times when shouted orders are necessary are actually few and far between, and unquestioned obedience is earned by mutual respect, patiently built over a long period of time. The book is particularly striking for the emphasis placed on earning that respect, and for the warning against the abuse of power.

In organisations today the abuse of power is usually called "ego" and overbearing managers are referred to as Alpha males. Such behaviour remains unfortunately prevalent in the ... Read More:

An exceptional account of the horrors of life and the struggle to survive in the Belsen concentration camp as seen through the eyes of a child. Compelling to read, it is emotionally devastating, highlighting the atrocities that took place at the hands of the Nazi's, made all the more powerful by the straightforward simplicity of the prose and the first hand account of the author.
It is also uplifting and hopeful in it's depiction of the love, care and selfless bravery of both Hetty and those who looked after her and the other children of Belsen. I highly recommend this book.

Fascinating book which broke down a lot of the myths I had learnt about the 2nd World War. However, it looks at the situation purely from a political point of view and covers little background as to: the economy, the public, the USA and the preparations for war.

If you're after a casual more rounded read I'd look elsewhere, but as a focused 'text book' this is pretty definitive.

I read this book after hearing about it from the open university, and i wasn't dissapointed. It gives a perspective of the two wars that many historians including teachers never touch upon. The concept of total war is given significant space which will make you rethink the criterea of a so called 'total'war'. It covers the two war with a smooth transition covering some of the post-war aspects of european society. I would highly recommend this book to people of all educational backgrounds be it A-level or degree status.

I purchased this book after my son read the excellent 'American Serviceman Guide to Britain'. He was interested to read other books along the same lines. This is slightly different from the Americans book, because it goes into more detail about what it meant to the French to be occupied, dealing with subjects such as food shortages, the lack of men in towns and villages and the dangers of loose women, particularly in areas where there had been German encampments.

I would recommend this book to anyone wanting a greater understanding of this period, because in its comparative simplicity, it is much more than just another historical text. This is the sort of source material which my own History teacher told us is essential to really understand what ... Read More:

A story of a family of women trying to cope and survive during the blitz in Birmingham,it made me thankful that I haven't had to face the hardships of families being split. Loved ones parted, husbands and children seperated. The story was a little bit of a tear jerker towards the end. A very good read, again like all of Annie Murray's books I could not put it down till I had finished reading it even though I had read it twice before. What I find with all the Author's book, she certainly must carry out a lot of research, her books are full of little snippits of information that take you back in time and reminds you of the things you forgot about when you were young, expecially as most of her books are all set in the area of Birmingham and the fact that I was ...
