I have read several of the books related to Band of Brothers (not all) and have found this one the best so far because it was written in a way unaffected by the fame that the Ambrose book & series brought. It talks & tells about soldiers never mentioned in the series and gives a differant view and angle to several of the stories within the series. I don't think David Webester ever claimed to be a hero and some of the book hardly leaves him in a great light, but its honest at least! I just wish he had served at Bastogne (he missed it due to a wound in Holland) to relay his angle on those events. Must read if your a B of B fan.

When I first got the book I was unsure whether I would enjoy it. Once I got started I didnt want to put it down.
He describes the story soo well. I could picture each situation really well and it had me on the edge of my seat when I was reading it.
I actually felt if I was there and I could feel every emotion the characters where going through.

This is quite possibly the best history book I've read. It weaves personal accounts into the fabric of history, making for a rich tapestry. Three years after reading it I still find myself thinking about some of the characters. David Wanklyn, commander of the submarine Upholder, stands out, as does the skill and bravery of Adrian `Warby' Warburton, a reconnaissance pilot; Warby even led an enemy ship to the downed crew of another Allied plane. Warby forged a relationship with Christina Ratcliffe, a dancer. How this unravels is, for me, one of the most poignant moments of the book.

Holland strikes the correct balance between recounting history - the seige, the convoys, the blitz - and the personal accounts. I noticed one tiny error: Mtarfa ... Read More:

Much to the embarassment of many, including his superiors, Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty rescued many from faschism and certain death in Rome during World War II. He did it all with a twinkle in his eye and a sense of humour that kept him sane throughout it all.

A man who is largely unrecognised in Ireland. I wonder if he would like the idea that he has a commemorative grove of trees and a poem dedicated to him by Brendan Kennelly. He was never a man who sought fame, just a man who thought he was doing a job, the job he became a priest to do and that it was only right to do it as best he could. With co-operation of many people around him he ensured the survival of many.

A touching portrait of a man who should be held as an example ... Read More:

Best holocaust book I have read to date. Very well written and informative. Book does differ from the film with obvious detail that you would expect. Read the Pianist after this but did not come close to this one.

Buy it!! Read it!! Remember!!

This book was very helpful when I did the Nazi state at A-level History, as it explains very important events, people, definitions etc. I am now doing the same topic at University, and I am using this book again to refresh my memory, so it can be useful beyond A-level. The book even provides some practice exam questions based on sourcework. This book is designed around the edexcel specification, but could still be useful to other exam boards. Definitely a worthwhile buy.

I first read this when I was 12 in the early '70's, and snapped this up as soon as I saw it has been re-printed.

Gibson started right at the beginning of the war in Bombers, did a stint in nightfighters (he was due for rest, but wouldn't accept the genuine break from the war that his superiors wanted him to have), then went back to Bombers through to his being killed in a raid over Germany after he returned to front line duty post Dambusters' raids.

This autobiographical book chronicles the aerial bombing campaign, and, as well as recording Gibson's personal experiences, the people he knew, and some of the scrapes that they got up to on base, charts the developing sophistication of RAF Bomber Command's tactics and aircraft.

I went on a battlefield tour of the D-Day landing beaches and the Normandy campaign, and found this fantastically useful. Having things like the flooded areas marked on the map helped put it all into context on the ground.
