When I first got the book I was unsure whether I would enjoy it. Once I got started I didnt want to put it down.
He describes the story soo well. I could picture each situation really well and it had me on the edge of my seat when I was reading it.
I actually felt if I was there and I could feel every emotion the characters where going through.

This is one of the very best and most lyrical books I have ever read. The writing is polished and spare, every word counts, and the prose is poetic, and can only be compared with Anne Michaels' beautiful book "Fugitive Pieces". A totally engrossing and satisfying read. I fail to understand why anyone would not enjoy it and be moved by it.

I was surprised to recently come across this book in Waterstones (more expensive than on Amazon!) and bought this book on a whim. My late father was a young stoker on HMS Rodney - joining in 1943 - after Bismark - but in time for D-Day and the Russian convoys. He left the ship following Victory in Europe and was in Vancouver ready to join the Pacific fleet when the war ended.

This is a wonderful history - accessible for non-specialists like myself. Following a brief introduction to the Admiral himself and the first ships that subsequently bore his name, the book focuses on the battleship laid down in the 1920s and finally broken up in 1948.

The strange shape of the Rodney and her sister ship Nelson resulted from the ... Read More:

You don't get them much better than this. It is an absolute classic. Foreign Office Mandarin turns MP, then joins the LRDG, the SAS and finally becomes "our man" in Yugoslavia with a brief to find "this Tito chap" that nobody really believes existed.

Sir Fitzroy certainly led a remarkable life, which he vividly describes, whilst at all times remaining understated. He comes across as a person who almost by accident stumbles into fortune and adventure and at times gets away with some of the most remarkable stunts. This gives him the gentlemanly and humourous appeal, which I am sure has led many to believe that he was a source of inspiration for Fleming's 007.

The book, which is divided into three sections is an easy holiday or aeroplane ... Read More:

As a history student with a keen interest in the subjects that this book covers I gladly greeted the opportunity to read this book as part of a module for my second year at University. However I found the way the author had written this book to be difficult to read despite my perseverance to the end. Furthermore his idea that the myth of the blitz was wholly a product of propaganda and that in fact Britain was made up of anti-Semitic collaborators who were one step away from crumbling and who relied almost totally on American support was deeply flawed. It seems a pity to me that the author missed the opportunity to write a genuinely interesting and different piece of work and instead produced a sensationalist piece that despite selling copies will soon end up in second hand ...
