Night by Elie Wiesel is not only one of the definitve works on Holocaust literature, it is one of the most definitve works on humanity.
This is a factual record of Wiesel's experiences from 1941, when the author was 12 years old, dedicated to learning Talmud and thirsting to learn Kaballah, to his experiences after Jews were forced into ghettoes and then transported to the death camps.
Written in Yiddish in 1958 and translated into English in 1960.
It is a record of Wiesel's childhood in the death camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau. It is dedicated to the memory of Wiesel's parents and his little sister Tzipora who were cruelly murdered in the Nazi inferno.
The book is stark in it's record of everything seen by the author ... Read More:

153.Where Eagles Dare by: Alistair MacLean

Books : Where Eagles Dare
A group of allied soldiers are dropped by parachute into Germany in order to find a way inside Schloss Adler (the castle of the eagle), the combined headquarters of the German Secret Service and the Gestapo. They have to rescue Lieutenant General Carnaby, an American general who is the overall co-ordinator for Operation Overlord, the Second Front, before he talks.

Someone though is sabotaging their efforts; can a member of the six British and one American Special Forces team be a traitor? The commanding officer, Smith, has brought a woman with him too, a fact unknown to the other team members. Added to that are the problems of the elite Alpenkorps being stationed at the foot of the mountain and the Castle, built on the side of the mountain, being ... Read More:

Rees succeeds brilliantly in analysing and explaining why Japanese soldiers behaved as they did from the very beginning when they occupied China and committed war crimes on a scale that rivals those of the Nazis or, more recently for example those committed in Rwanda. He gives the reader a detailed insight into Japanese mentality, the social structure (to some extent still unchanged) and tries to get behind who was really in command in Japan at that time: the Japanese Officers or Hirohito. If you read "The Rape of Nanking" by Iris Chang (which I also recommend), by reading this book, you will know why it could happen. Highly recommended.

This is an excellent book.
Parker presents the reader with a concise & authoritative account of the battle. His use of source material is excellent; the narrative is supported by eye-witness accounts from combatants from both sides of the conflict & by the testimonies of civilians. These accounts add authority to the text. The book is firmly focussed upon the experience of, & the effects of, armed conflict upon a range of individuals. Parker's criticisms of senior commenders are supported by evidence & his arguments are always reasoned & convincing & based upon a cool assessment of their actions & not upon easy prejudices. He easily avoids historicism & characature.
Perhaps the major strength of this book is in ... Read More:

This is an excellent biography of Guy Gibson of which the Dams Raid is only a very small part of the book. The book covers the life of Gibson from birth to death. The story of his unhappy childhood from a broken home, his tense and failing marriage, his relationship with his men, which wasn't alway the best, particularly the ground crew. His life wasn't easy but through his determination he was noticed and came to lead the raid that was to make his name. Some of the book covers his tour of Canada and America and his dabble with politics and selection as a Parliamentary Candidate. The story of the making of the Film "The Dambusters" starring Richard Todd was good, including the "Spooky" incident involving the dog that was to play the part of Gibsons dog.The final chapters ... If you have the slightest interest in aviation since the 1930's this book will leave you open mouthed in awe at the incredible experiences of the author. No-one would have the audacity to write this as fiction for fear of it being branded "too far fetched!". If being taken for a flight by Ernst Udet before WW2 and watching Hanna Reitsch fly one of the first helicopters inside the Olympic stadium isn't enough, the author goes on to fly every major UK, US, German, Italian, Russian and Japanese aircraft of world war two before being at the very forefront of the jet age and conquering of the "Sound Barrier"....and all whilst being in our Navy! Written from his personal diaries, the style is humble and events put down to good fortune when I am sure they are really due to ... Read More:

The details of Luck and a Lancaster are adequately reviewed elsewhere, but I have to say how much I enjoyed it. This book is extremely well written and can be both funny and tragic. It sticks in my mind that the young Yates has a penchant for straying off course and 'buzzing' his parent's house during operational training. The reader then gets to know his aircrew, and accompanies them on some harrowing missions, courtesy of the flowing and detailed narrative. There's the Squadron reunion, where the crew are older but unchanged in character and Harry's emotional return to what was RAF Mepal. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and spending some time with these gallant young men.

Books : 18 Platoon
"Most importantly, it was in the bocage that I began to appreciate how vital is grip: grip on oneself, grip on one's soldiers and grip on the situation."
"... guided a Bren gun carrier loaded with ammunition up to our exposed position just in time to be told that no food was left. I did not allow this oversight to occur again."
"Battle School instructors ... tended to become pedagogues: disciples of the DS (Directing Staff) solution about which no argument was tolerated."
"Infantry had to fit into the big picture, rarely operating without artillery and armoured support. The most successful actions by 18 Platoon were fought without the support of either. We learned in a hard school how to skirmish, infiltrate and edge our way forward."
"Far too much time had been ... Read More:
