This is arguably the best-presented collection of Anglo-Saxon prose and poetry in a single book, expertly and masterfully translated by the author. Includes Beowulf, The Seafarer, The Wanderer, The Battle of Maldon, Bede, Caedmon..with lively commentaries, making Anglo-Saxon culture easily accessible to the reader. This is a cherry-picking of the top items of the literature. For those purists and language-lovers like me, it lacks the side-by-side Anglo-Saxon versions of the texts.
Perhaps there will be another Vol 2 which provides this?

This is one of the most important books of the Twentieth Century. In these times of increased nuclear proliferation, sabre-rattling and political machismo - the human cost of such weapons is often forgotten. Hersey captures the immediate aftermath of the Hiroshima bomb with a detached humanity, showing us what happened without preaching to us. The results are all the more horrifying as we are left to our own inevitable conclusion. This is a book that everybody should read.

I think I would rather have read a long introduction by Beevor or whoever, and then a proper collection of Grossman's articles - rather than a series of fragments inserted into a narrative history of the War on the Eastern Front written not by Grossman but by Beevor. Maybe this is because Beevor assumes that the reader just won't know the history; even so it's annoying way to handle it.

That said, Grossman is a very interesting and sympathetic character, and there's nothing wrong with Beevor's narrative either. I was very moved both by the enormous privation and sacrifices of some Red Army soldiers - and the powerful contrasts between those who were prepared to sacrifice and suffer, and those who seem to have happily deserted and then "un ... History books do not normally make for a riveting read, but this has to be an exception! If you have read and enjoyed Suite Francaise read this - it has the same thought-provoking immediacy and will stay with you for a long time. The author has tracked down the unknown and unsung stories of ordinary people living in the eastern Pyrenees during WW II and the hardships and sacrifices they endured can at times be unbearably sad.

Painstakingly researched, Rosemary Bailey has sensitively teased out, and preserved for posterity, the personal testimonies of survivors (now elderly and often reluctant to talk) whose stories could have been lost forever. A chronological account of the course of the war in France is seamlessly interwoven with the stories ... Read More:

A-Level and AS students may well know this already - but buy, beg or borrow your own copy as soon as you can. Clear, concise narratives and careful explanation of historical opinion make this an essential text for anyone studying Germany and/or Italy in the 20th century. The author has pitched this book at exactly the right level for sixth-formers, although the general reader would enjoy this too. Highly recommended.

Carius served in several tanks throughout the war, from the small Panzer 38(t) to the Tiger I and briefly, the huge Jagdtiger. He fought against the Russians and the Americans, although the majority of the book is mainly concerned with his 'Tiger' actions against the Russians. It is an interesting book for anyone who likes personal accounts of armoured warfare during the Second World War.
Personally, whilst I enjoyed the book, I thought it was a bit too sanitized for my tastes, as regards his re-telling of the various actions. He does not go into great detail about them, perhaps in an effort not to seem to be gloryifying his many successes, but I felt that in reading it, I was never really 'there' with him, if you know what I mean.
Many other memoirs ... Read More:

As a professional battlefield Guide I am always searching for information on the German `enemy' as too often history (as ever) is told by the victors. This is a very good addition to the view from the other side and gives a comprehensive insight into tactical and operational considerations in Normandy (strategic being necessarily a matter for Berlin).
The main focus is on the situation in 1944 and as well as including many invaluable personal accounts of individual soldiers, gives us the command problems of the senior officers. The fallacy that the Atlantic Wall could be adequatly defended by second rate garrison troops when a key component of the defence plan was to deny the landings on the beaches, is clearly shown in the frustrations of the local commanders. That the ... Read More:

I was totally into this book from the first page and could not put it down. I read it within 2 days. I thought it was excellently written and kept the reader's interest throughout and would totally recommend it.
