This was a good solid overview of the Second World War. I approached this book with two reservations:

1 Being a "For Dummies" book would it be grossly oversimplified to the point of being almost worthless?

2 As an Englishman, I was worried that the American author might scim over the period from the 3 September 1939 to the 7 December 1941 and then put most of the emphasis on the US contribution.

Both of these fears proved unfounded and the book provided a solid basic grounding. I still prefer John Keegan's "The Second World War" but this was a very worth while effort.

I bought this book purely on the strength of seeing the excellent movie of the same name.I can honestly say that it is amongst the top ten books I have ever read.I,like many other people, have caught glimpses of what it must of been like to be a Jew during the second world war especially in German occupied countries.I have always thought to myself that it must have been a living nightmare.I was wrong,it must have been far worse than that.

Wladyslaw Szpilman describes here the true horror of life as a Jew in a truly descriptive but never angry way.His story is almost beyond belief at times and you wonder how the hell he survived. As he tells his story you are left wondering just how he managed to escape the nazi's time after time.Lucky? It ... Not to be bought if you are after details of battle as the author does not go through them in too much details, or in the amount of details some would expect. However a very interesting book for those like me who wondered how a kid ended up in teh Waffen SS, and his thoughts during the war.

Heavy going, especially to begin with when dealing with the inter-war period, although this is essential to understand why the war started when it did and not three years earlier or two years later.
Full of surprising insights, the sort of thing you would never normally think of, such as how shortage of railway wagons because of thousands being required to supply the Eastern Front disrupted the German industrial economy at home. I've never heard this mentioned before and yet, when you think of it, it's obvious.
The inescapable and ultimately insoluble problems caused by such things as shortage of labour, food (seemingly the most severe shortage and the one which forced the regime into apparently insane gambles ) and even imported cattle feed.
Or the ... Read More:

I, too, was very impressed by this book. The author's integrity and honesty shine through as do his achievements at a very young age. I find it remarkable how very much his story is like the stories of the young RAF pilots on the English side of the Channel. An excellent read.

During World War II, Britain dispatched many presentable young men to argue its case to America, to pick up insights, to grab secrets that could be used, and to influence American decisions. Where several books have emphasized the spymaster behind these efforts, Canadian William Stephenson, this book looks at the young men exercising their influence in Washington, D.C. Roald Dahl (author of James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) was one of the most effective, but his peers also included Ian Fleming (author of the James Bond books) and David Ogilvy (of advertising fame . . . thinking Hathaway shirts).

Ms. Conant writes about these young men and those they seduced (men into sharing secrets and women often into their boudoirs) in a ... Read More:

Hi !

I bought this book at Cardiff airport on my way on holiday and for the full duration of the holiday I was totally and utterly gripped by such a fascinating read.

I am not the best person at expressing what I want to say in text but I felt compelled to write something even though I know that I can never do William Ash or Brendan Foley (Author) enough justice.

The book brought out so many emotions in me...I laughed, I seriously shed a tear and I ended the book feeling so totally inadequate and humbled by one man.

I know that there were many men / women who sacrificed during the war but William truly is a hero. I hope that William feels proud to see that his memory will live on via the book and to know that I will re-read it ... Read More:

If you are a diver yourself - and particularly if you are a wreck diver - reading this book will bring you back the memory of the smell of salvages items. You will be reminded of the fierce competition when it comes to be the first to salvage precious items such as the bell of a wreck. You will be brought back into the secrecy surrounding a new position of a wreck. You will review the hassel of composing a diving team willing to dive deep and spend a substantial amount of time preparing for the dive and go into the game where the whether at the end of the day has the final saying if you will dive or not.
If you don't dive yourself, this is the closest you will get to the true spirit of wreck diving. Probably it is the most realistic dive you can make from your easy chair.

Having read this book, I had the great priviledge of meeting Diana Banarto Walker. The sparkling and sometimes mischievous wit contained in this, to my taste, well-written book, was totally evident in meeting this grand lady. This is a story that delicately blends humour, determination, tragedy and triumph. It's well worth a read by anyone, but, if like me you have a passion for things aeronautical, then it's a must!
