In this book, Figes has diluted and refined his mastery of the art of weaving historical sources together. These family narratives which, without this book, would certainly have been lost, provide a compelling insight into the reality of Soviet Russia - the 'historical' backdrop of dates and movements takes a back seat to the gritty honesty of real people's testimony of what living through this era was actually like.
A fantastic read.

A must read for anyone interested in Operation "Market Garden" and the great battles of WW II in general. Superbly researched and well-written, it demolishes the myth of the allegedly German material "superiority" during that epic battle.

I was drawn to this book and found it to be a compelling read. A lot of little things reveal themselve in the book - like how walking through Siberia as a guard can be more difficult in some ways than being a prisoner (read the book to find out why). It has its emotional moments and offered me a lot of food for thought about courage, compassion, and in some ways how life works through different circles of events all interplaying. For all of its sadness I found it to be a very inspiring book.

Finally a book that tells the story of the remarkable women nurses in WW2. From the first page the reader is immediately transported to the world that these women were part of. From their nursing training to the weird and wonderful details of their uniform.

If you think you know what nurses such as these did in WW2, then think again. The horrors they endured and the terrible situations they found themselves in will shock the reader and leave you with nothing but admiration for their spirit and bravery.

The book has plenty of quotes and paragraphs from the women themselves, and/or diary entries from that time. A few of the women are featured throughout the book, and the reader will find themselves taken vividly back to that time ... Read More:

James Holland's generosity of spirit and indefatiguable labour has created one of the best general histories I've read recently--and there's a lot of stiff competition about. As well as using writen sources, Holland personally interviewed survivors from all sides of the conflict; Germans, Poles, Canadians, Britons, Americans, Italian partisans and fascists. These accounts give a vivid picture of the heroism and brutality of war, and instil a sense of sympathy for (almost) all of the participants. Their stories are skillfully blended into the larger narrative, which explains what happened, and why the major players (Alexander, Mark Clark, Kesselring, Churchill, Roosevelt, Mussolini, etc) made crucial decisions. Holland is immenently fair-minded; the controversy ... Read More:

The trouble with reading too many books about our dark periods of history is the lowering effect it can have on the rest of ones life. Loved ones become accustomed to lectures over breakfast on the iniquities of Nazi Germany. Squabbling children are reminded about the consequences of unbridled human aggression. Family shopping trips are punctuated by laments on the consumerist nature of today's culture. After a literary diet of "Auschwitz" and "Their Darkest Hour", it's back to the Moomintrolls and Clive James for me. That or I'll find myself banished to the Sunnydays asylum for over-serious wives and mothers.

But I digress. "Their Darkest Hour" is a fine piece of work and a very necessary read for anyone trying to understand the lessons that a conflict ... Read More:

39.Europe at War 1939-1945: No Simple Victory by: Norman Davies

This is written with both humour and intelligence and is a startling re-examination of what you thought you knew about WW2. Davies's first point that every country involved has created it's own very national interpretation of what happened you immediately realise must be true and therefore your own understanding must therefore be flawed. This intellectual conundrum keeps you reading through an excellent book that is full of surprises and fascinating facts.

My grumbles are threefold. While this book discusses how you should see this war as a whole and therefore start discussing the importance of Polish resistance or the fact that Belorussia suffered worse than any other country in the war, it does ignore the other bit of the war...the Pacific. True the book is called ... Read More:

This is a really good book. While Stalin may be a character who it's hard to empathise with, Service approaches the topic with complete objectiity, leaving the reader to make up their own minds on the facts. The book is divided into nearly 50 chapters of ten to twelve pages each, which makes it easier to digest each separate issue and event the author addresses. Overall, great book for anyone keen on knowing more about Stalin.
