Amongst historians this book has quickly reached the status of a classic. But it deserves to have a much broader readership as the subject it tackles - that of how 'ordinary men' can end up doing morally repugnant deeds - has implications that go far beyond its historical context. There is a human tendency to categorise and blame groups of people because it is easier than facing the possibility that anyone is capable of horror. An example would be the claim that 'religion causes wars' - it places the burden on an external agency, on the 'other' rather than the fact that anyone can commit an atrocity.

This is what Browning's book illustrates beautifully; the gradual steps these ordinary men take on the path to atrocity. Browning ... Read More:

This is in all senses a fascinating book. So rare to read a factual acccount of the war written by a woman, about women. It benefits greatly from a throrough treatment of the human and personal aspects of life in these momentous times. It is at once a biography, a detective story, a spy story and a narrative of war time events, illuminated throughout by the tale of the enigmatic life and tragic end of Noor Inayat Khan. It is a very fitting tribute to the other courageous women and men of SOE. The only problem with this book is putting it down once you have started reading.

An adsorbing and fascinating account of a true war hero and his life as a campaigning soldier. This edition is spoilt however by having been rewritten for the American market and therefore loses some of it's meaning from the original and in places can read like an American war film and all that that encompasses.
It's particularly disappointing that at the end of the book, on page 424, there is a table of Wehrmacht and SS rank comparisons against US ranks but a list of British ranks is not given.
Overall try to buy the 1994 English edition if you can, but this edition is certainly well worth reading if the English edition cannot be found.

This book has had such an effect on me. It is sad, harrowing, horrifying, and, worst of all, TRUE!! I just can't begin to imagine how it must have been for these poor people, who were persecuted, degraded, humiliated and executed and all by other 'human' beings. We like to think of ourselves as so clever, so superior, and that we are good people. Not so. Although we know some of what happened in these concentration camps, and we know how the Jews and other ethnic minorities sufferred, we like to sweep it under the carpet. It's in the past. It's history. It's over. Well, it may be in the past, but it will never be over. It is an indelible stain on the face of humanity, and how anyone can try to deny it ever happened is beyond me. Read these eye-witness accounts of ... Read More:

My friends and I have created a new genre for this book -- creative non science fiction. This is a wonderful book; check your assumptions at the door and enjoy a speculative masterpiece. If nothing else, you will know more about the SS and Hans Kammler than you would otherwise. Did all of these events happen? Well ...

`History provides many examples of a British Army being asked to operate under appalling handicaps by the politicians responsible for British Policy, but I doubted that the British Army had ever found itself in a graver position than that in which the governments of the last twenty years had placed it.'

Maj Gen Noel Mason-MacFarlane briefing the press, 15 May 1940

So opens Julian Thompson book on the Dunkirk Campaign, the title is a bit misleading since it covers the whole employment of the BEF in that forgotten campaign of 1940. Julian Thompson rightly points out that within twenty years the best-trained, best equipped and best-command army went to within a hairs breath of total defeat. The army that in 1918 was at the height of its powers ... Read More:

The author has produced what is surely the last word in explaining the rise and fall of Nazi Germany. This is an economic history, and this allows the real story of the Third Reich to be told. Like all history, the prosecuting of war really depends on the ability to raise and sustain a war machine - this has been the case for most of history. By concentrating on this fundamental fact, the book clarifies the actions of the Third Reich and it's leaders. Essentially, Germany in 1920 had the choice of either accepting it wasn't a major power and becoming a satellite state of the US, living as an exporting economy, or going down the road of war and becoming a world power and exploiting Europe as a conquered empire. Many in Germany at the time refused to accept the former, and ... Read More:

I've read a lot of Holocaust books that describe the terror and atrocities of the concentration camps, but I found this book very unusual in that despite Hetty being at the same time and place as the other victims, one turn of fate after another leads to her narrowly escaping all the worst horrors of WWII and surviving relatively unscathed right on the edge of it all.
Hetty's wonderful strong caring character shines through in this book making this a less bleak read than most other Holocaust autobiographies, but still as poignant.

Good: A thorough presentation of the events leading to war, and the ideologies and personalities involved. A good overview to non-initiated. Although there are other books written with similar reach, most of them have been written before the opening of Soviet archives and are thus deprived of some important sources.

Bad: A somewhat chatty writing style, not very useful maps. A couple of gross factual errors regarding the Finnish participation in the conflict left me doubting the accuracy of the entire book. Bellamy takes the estimate of Finnish casualties in the Winter War from Soviet sources, and based on that hardly neutral source he claims that almost twice as many Finns were killed in that war as very thorough Finnish official statistics say (Russians say 48,000 and Finns 26,000). ... This book should be read by all Spitfire lovers. This book can only be described as an enthralling account not of one test pilot but all. This man made one of the best contributions any single person could have made between the years of 1940-1945 to that of Spitfire Aviation. With a total of 37000 test flights and every one could have so easily have been his last. His product knowledge shines through as the sun shines through the clouds, and his acrobatic style and ease of which he flew these birds of the sky, saved his life on many occasions. Many people have said " The book I am reading at the moment is so good I just don't want to put it down", being a local man not two mile away from the Airfield I must agree. The man's precence can be felt around you as you are reading, you fly as he flies, ... Read More:
