The sister book of Castles of Steel, Dreadnought deals with the build up to World War I and the political situation that led to the outbreak of the Great War.

Couldnt really be any more comprehensive, the book is full of fascinating information and provides a detailed and accurate description of it's subject matter.

Massie's writing, as in Castles of Steel, is easy to read and does a reasonable job of keeping you interested (which is a good job considering the books length).

I've rated it 4 stars rather than 5 (which I gave Castles of Steel) as there were a few parts of the book that were quite heavy going, I found myself re-reading some passages to make sure I was keeping up. It did strike me that there ... Read More:

The recent 90th anniversary of the end of the Great War spurred me to seek out some literature on the subject. My mother's father fought at Ypres and Arras, and was invalided home after a mustard gas attack. I was only 10 years old when he died, but I wish I could have talked to him about his experiences. This book gives a potted history of each year of the war followed by accounts of various survivors who were interviewed in the 1970's. I aim to read more of the Forgotten Voices series to further my knowledge. I received Harry Patch's The Last Fighting Tommy in the post today and look forward to reading his highly acclaimed account of his time in the trenches.

This book is among the great pieces of writing about WW1 aviation. I read somewhere that Yeates wrote this while dying from TB and was upset to discover that his publisher had reassigned a romantic novelist to rewrite the last chapter.

If you liked this book, read Sagittarius Rising by Cecil Lewis.

Peter Hart, as one has come to expect, has written a first class account of the 1918 Air War. He has used his intimate knowledge of Great War veterans to illuminate their vital part in achieving the hard won victories in the late summer and autumn of 1918.

In this book Peter Hart has made extensive use of the Oral History Archives held at the Imperial War Museum. Each chapter is well illuminated with the reminiscences of those who were there. Along side Hart's simple yet very effective understanding of the conflict he is writing about, one comes to understand just what the pilot's and aircrew of the Royal Flying Corp and later the Royal Air Force had to contend with on a daily basis.

The book certainly draws the reader into the chaotic and turbulent world ... Read More:

We sometimes forget the sheer size of the world wars, especially as todays conflicts are viewed from the comfort of our back rooms via a satellite link-up. They didn't just devour the volunteer soldier, but ate into all catagories of people, rich, poor, educated, all faced the same grim reality. Here we see, if only briefly the workings, of what appears to be an educated mind, bogged down in the dirt and mud of warfare. A typically British outlook that at times can cause you to smile inwardly. Not only an interesting snap shot, but a good book for the GCSE pupil who wants to obtain 1st hand information. The book / diary is only short and due to its free flowing narrative style, can easily be read in one sitting. At first glance some may feel dissapointed at the few pages to found between the covers, ... Read More:

Based on previous reviews, I was looking forward to reading this book and was not disappointed. It is extremely well researched and certainly changed many of my perceptions about the battle - even down to the difficulty of verifying what ship was where, when it did what, to whom, and how often! In my naivety, I assumed that ships' positions and course changes were fairly well known, and agreed, from my previous dabblings. Mr. Gordon's book certainly paid put to that misconception on my part! I found the part of the book dealing with the workings of the Victorian Navy fascinating, too, and certainly relevant in putting the thinking of some of the senior officers involved into context. One, very slight, criticism I would make is that there is not enough reference to the German senior officers', and ... Read More:

Speaking as someone who spends his entire day immersed in research, research and even more research, I am instantly able to recognise a kindred spirit. From the moment I opened this book and began to scan through it's 250 pages, I knew I was in possession of an item of considerable quality which had been thoroughly researched by the author.

This is a large coffee-table size book laid out in the best way possible. For those who are not quite sure of exactly what is a "Big Gun Monitor," what better than to commence with it's origins. This is followed by sections devoted to the 14 in., 12 in., First 15 in., Ex Brazilian River Monitors, Ex-Norwegian vessels, Small Monitors, Second 15 in., Last 15 in. and the guns they used before the author offers a retrospective view. Altogether, I view this book ... Read More:

The size of Peter Hart's book may be off-putting for some, but once opened, it becomes an intimate companion. I felt so close to those at first uncomprehending, soldiers. The futility and the bravery of the battle are given equal coverage, and the special quality of this book is the link the reader gets to the men themselves. I will return to the fields of the Somme with a clearer and even sadder vision of those who fought and died in that tiny piece of France.

While Martin Gilbert is clearly writing from a position of huge erudition and learning, the structure of the book is such, in my humble opinion, that it is unclear what his exact purpose is. On the one hand he is trying to paint the big picture, detailing all the intricacies of the various fronts of the war, even introducing fronts that I didn't know or had forgotten were there, such as those of Salonica or Libya. On the other hand he is trying to leaven it with the personal experiences of soldiers on the ground. And while we do get some sort of cross section of the experiences of combatants from the various participant nations, by far the largest preponderance of these are of the British experience on the Western Front. One is thus left with the impression that Gilbert was not sure if he was writing a big picture ... Read More:

If you have any interest at all in the intrigue of The Great Game or you have read John Buchans "Greenmantle" this is an absolute must. This has to be one of the easiest factual books I've ever read, with all the suspense of a thriller novel in the form of historical accounts. I honestly couldn't put the book down.
