This excellent value for money, easy to read and long out of print volume covers the history of ten battalions of the Lincolnshire Regiment whilst they were on active service in the Great War and therefore military historians, local and family history researchers together with medal collectors and many general readers will find it an informative read and a must for their bookshelves. The Lincolnshire Regiment had just two regular and two territorial battalions when war broke out, however it rapidly grew in size and by the end of hostilities, had raised no less than a further 14 battalions. I was very pleased to see this superb book being re-issued, especially in hard back. My old soft back copy has become worn over the years and i looked forward to my delivery. However, i was to be very disappointed. The photographic reproduction is nothing short of terrible. Unless the printers re-issue this book on the basis of poor images i wouldn't bother purchasing it. To say i am disappointed is an under statement.

This is a fascinating account of Tommy's real life exploits of derring-do and patriotism. The calculated and shrewd heroism is an unusual concept - certainly in the world outside the secret services. The book brings to mind the the writings of the old maestro, John Buchan. It would make a terrific film. I can't wait!

This is not the first book on this subject and likely not the last but it is entirely worth your obtaining now because it includes information that was probably not available for earlier treatments. The antipodeans which wrote this tome are well suited to the task due to the enormous and often unconsidered contribution their countrymen and others from the Empire made to the battles here. I was left with a mixture of feelings as I turned the last page. The most overwhelming is the sense of inevitability about the whole tragic course of events. You are impressed by the bravery and the skill of the participants in the face of terrific odds. Yet if only this had been matched or even approached by those who planned these actions. At long last, a single volume account of the fascinating campaign in Mesopotamia. For many years, the only really good work on Mespot was A. J. Barker's masterly "The Neglected War", published by Faber and Faber in 1967. It still stands up to examination today, but is terribly hard to find. Other than that, there is only the Official History and a number of memoirs: the short bibliography in this new book is testament to the lack of coverage of the campaign. I've often wondered why the Mespot camapign is so badly covered in literature terms. No Boy's Own tales of landings, bungled and heroic attacks and meticulous withdrawal at as Gallipoli?
