Brilliant. T E Lawrence poured his soul into this magnificently crafted autobiography. It takes you from his arrival in Cairo as an upstart academic, through his dramatic evolution into a desert soldier/strategist and leader of the Arab revolt against the Turks, to his ultimate failure to win justice for the people he'd grown to be part of. Lawrence was a gifted writer as well as an extraordinary soldier and I was fascinated by the insights that run through it: into his political naivety, his ambivalent loyalties, and the hints of concern (almost certainly ill-founded) about his own mental state. The combination of high politics and personal danger, played out in the dramatic and mysterious Arab world as it meets the West is quite magnificent. ... Read More:

For a book as compact as this, Howard does quite an enviable task of outlining the 'Great War' (as it was know to it's combatants). In fact, calling it an outline, or indeed 'very short', does it a minor disservice. Howard doesn't leave anything substantial out or waste any pages with discussion of the trivial. The end impression given is of a historian trying to let the grand events speak for themselves.

After reading the book I felt not only that it had given me a better grasp of the chronology and general outline of the war, but also answers to some of the key questions.
Why, despite the fact that only 10 years earlier war with France (again) seemed the likelier, conflict with Germany was eventually unavoidable given the clumsy ... Read More:

I've had an interest in general history since school days - a long time ago now. However I still find it rare to engage with a history book - often a succession of facts, dates, kings and queens. That is what is so refreshing and invigorating about Peter Hart's 1918. Real people, real stories woven by the author into a strong narrative that explains, clearly and concisely the strategic thinking from the top of the food chain down to the fortunes and misfortunes of the `poor bloody infantry'. This is a history book that really brings the first world war to life - and all too often - death. It demonstrates how the new boys on the block, the Americans, vital to the final victory - had to go through their own learning curve - they didn't learn from the suffering of the ... Read More:

I have read a lot on WW1 but discovered a lot of new information in this book. The author has some strong opinions but I found that refreshing.

A long overdue anthology of women's poetry from a time that seemed for along while, to belong exclusively to the more famous and tragic male war poets. This collection is a poignant answer to Wilfred Owen's condemnation of women as almost extraneous to the horror taking place around them. There are poems which reflect loss and the fear of loss. Poems by nurses and VAD's about the terrible injuries they treat and witness. Poems which are valid social statements by women working in munitions factories and as clippies. Poems by mothers, sisters, sweethearts and wives. The overwhelming feeling of being part of Vera Britain's 'lost generation', and the bitterness of losing their own claim on the future through the loss of their menfolk. Most of these poems are moving, some of them ... Read More:

Entering the busy, teeming Ypres (Ieper, as we have it) through the Menin Gate (de Menenpoort), any visitor will involuntarily believe the cosy old city has retained its erstwhile elegance unimpaired.
By 1917 the Ypres as Edmund Blunden saw it, had been reduced to smithereens. What remained was an eerie, godforsaken 'catacombed sepulchre', a spectre of a place the rare remnants of which appeared to him 'so evidently, but impossibly' medieval.
If anything, the place conjures up all the obvious reminiscences of Flanders' glorious Middle Ages, and first-time visitors will stare their eyes out here as they do in, say, Bruges or Ghent or Lille.
But there's one large but. As much as the surrounding region the present-day Ypres is a reconstruction. All through the Great ... Read More:

We are fortunate indeed that there are people like Richard van Emden, with that rare ability to transmit through print their own enthusiasm for their subject to that of their readers. As the last rays of dusk set on this unique generation, not surprisingly Britain's Last Tommies is told with great dignity and respect. It was a fact that for sixty or so years following the end of the Great War, no veteran ever spoke of his experiences; as children we were warned by our parents not to ask about it and, with the tantalising exception of an occasional anecdote relating to training or whilst off duty, the horrors and suffering witnessed by these men went unrecorded. It is only a newer generation of historians like van Emden who have used their reservoir of communications skills and personal ... Read More:

In May 2006, Andrew Robertshaw and I stood in Avril William's Ocean Villas tea rooms at Auchonvilliers. Andy told me the story of a British Soldier whose remains had been discovered at serre in 2003, and that amongst his possedcions were coins from Jersey, my home. Whilist everyone might not be lucky enough to be informed and inspired by the man himself, this book will run a close second. No Man's Land groupfirst came to genral notice because of the TV programmes Finding the Fallen and Trench Detectives. This book details the groups objectives and takes the reader through the life of a soldier in the trenches on the Western Front of the Great War. the book starts with a good basic explanation of archeological techniques, the relevance of finds and how they can support the historical record ...
