This is a very interesting account of a Red Cross Nurse's experiences during World War One. Although they are 'letters', they read just like an account of the action.

Certainly Miss Warner's obvious love for the French troops in the trenches or the 'Poilus' as she calls them, shines through every page.

I have read quite a few nurse war books, but I found this to be quite an eye opener, as I had not realised some of the nurses worked quite so hard as they did. Well recommended!

I was interested when I saw this book as my grandfather was at the Somme but would never speak of it. I had heard about it in history and seen a few television programs but I was interested to learn about it from the mind and voice of one who was there.

Once started the book is very hard to put down. My respect for my grandfather and those who went off to fight this war has grown tremendously.

A must read for those wishing to know about those unsung heroes who gave their all.

When this lousy war is over

I pose the question are there any duff title in the Shire Library?

They are great little books at only 56 pages but they are stuffed full of information. The author has created a logic by dividing the chapter into joining the colours, in the trenches, at rest to being demobilised.

It is a guide to the life of the poor bloody infantry,Plenty of black and white and colour photographs of uniforms, badges medals and memorabilia

My dad served in the second world war but on page 13 I have photo of my dad after his basic training in his RAF uniform that is the dead spit of a First world ward soldier with his bayonet and rifle. So not a lot of changes took place between the war.

If I was writing this review back in the late 1960s or 1970s then this book would probably have been given 4 or maybe 5 stars. However reading it today you realise how out dated Taylor's views and conclusions actually are. Written at a time when the blame for the mass killing of the war was placed on the commanders and politicians in a somewhat cynical and blinkered fashion.

Modern historians have updated their views and thinking as regards to the conduct of the Forst World War. Today we are much nearer to the truth than those of Taylor's day being more open minded in our thinking and judging historical facts (which is not easy) in new and more unbiased ways.

The book itself covers the war in a short but concise manner. However it ... Read More:

Ann Clayton has done a brilliant job in writing the story of one of the First World War's real heros. Her thorough research has enabled her to produce a book that really puts the reader in touch with Captain Noel Chavasse and the times in which he lived.

So much about him is fascinating, from his relationship with his twin brother, his schooling, and his somewhat privileged life as the son of the Bishop of Liverpool.

Before reading the book I was already an admirer of his, having read the citations for his two VCs and visited his grave whilst touring the Western Front. What Ms Clayton's book has done is put me in touch with him as an individual, a family member, loving brother and son. It provides an interesting insight into society ... Read More:

I've had an interest in general history since school days - a long time ago now. However I still find it rare to engage with a history book - often a succession of facts, dates, kings and queens. That is what is so refreshing and invigorating about Peter Hart's 1918. Real people, real stories woven by the author into a strong narrative that explains, clearly and concisely the strategic thinking from the top of the food chain down to the fortunes and misfortunes of the `poor bloody infantry'. This is a history book that really brings the first world war to life - and all too often - death. It demonstrates how the new boys on the block, the Americans, vital to the final victory - had to go through their own learning curve - they didn't learn from the suffering of ... Read More:
