Simon Scarrow is a teacher at a Sixth Form College. He has run a Roman History programme that takes parties of students to a number of sites and museums across Britain and I assume that while doing this he gleans lots of useful information for his books on the Roman Centurion, Macro and his Optio, Cato.

First published in 2002, this is the third book in the series. The book opens in Britain in the year 43 AD. The Emperor has returned to sunnier climes leaving the Roman army to continue its rape of Britain. After a protracted effort the Second Legion have been instrumental in quashing resistance in Camulodunum, leaving time for Macro and Cato to rest with the rest of the Legion.

Their General, Plautius has had ... Read More:

I'm a mom of a 7 year old and now that he's going to school I thought of getting him some activity books. My very busy sticker book has big drawings and stickers and they are just so much fun that I was really hoping he could invite me to join on the game. Beware not to hide the book for your own use before giving it to your child!!!

I bought this book from all the rave reviews.. but was surprised at what an stereotypical, 50's fairy-tale of a family it conveys.. the baby peers through the holes in the pages to see his mummy and daddy happily sleeping together, mummy making porridge, daddy bringing coal, grandma hanging washing etc etc. If like me, you don't live in a house like this, you may find it a tad nauseating.

The illustrations are lovely, but my 15th month old is more interested in the more colourful 'there was an old woman..' and Spot.

My 7 year old son loves audio books and we have lots! He likes King Arthur tales but they can often be quite difficult to read and understand. However this is read brilliantly and we have both been gripped. Admittedly I have quite often had to pause it and explain parts but it is read in chapters which gives you convenient places to recap. We have listened travelling to and from school and for 3 nights we sat in the car on the drive listening to see what happens. This is a great next step if they are getting a little to old for 'Stories for 5/6/7 year olds" audio books. It really is great. Buy it!

The author, Simon Scarrow teaches at a leading Sixth Form College. He has run a Roman History programme taking parties of students to a number of ruins and museums across Britain. This is the first in a series of books about Quintus Licinius Cato, Optio (second in command) to Macro a centurion and veteran of more than one campaign in the Roman legions.

In this, the fifth book in the series Cato has recently been appointed as a centurion as reward for the services he and Macro have given to both the legate of their Legion and also the Emperor Cludius himself. It is Ad44 and Claudius is eager for Britain to be pacified and is commander in Britain, Plautius is clearly feeling the strain of trying to bring peace to the British tribes ... Read More:

I found this while I was rooting through my teenage brothers books.
It didn't take long to read and I really enjoyed it. It is an original story that is well told. I often find myself thinking about the story and the character of Kensuke. Not bad for a childrens book!!
I have since enjoyed other Michael Morpurgo books.
I would recommend this for children and adults alike.

First of all, I must emphasize my respect for what Stella Gemmell set about doing. The task must have been truly immense for a woman and a wife to attempt to complete a novel so delightfully masculine, arrogant and casanova in nature (he re-wrote the Iliad for God's sake, with no regards for one of the greatest epics of all time).
Now such a statement may seem sexist or even chauvinistic, but I need to stress that those who think that must read on (as I do not mean it like that).
Troy's greatest triumph is unarguably its uncanny ability to make the reader truly care deeply for many of its characters and paint their roles in the Trojan war so differently to that of the Iliad (and dare I say it), the recent (shallow to say the least) feature ... Read More:

I was keen to buy a book that would help my three year to not only learn the letters of the alphabet but to also learn the sounds using phonics as well. I thought buying this book would help. Instead, I found the characters dry and the plot of each story tiresome.

Each sound has the letter written in black and white with arrows showing the way the word is to be written, which is helpful. Then in the margin, there are examples of words to match the letter sounds- but they are tiny. Hard to see let alone read. And I don't mean to be petty but the pictures look more freakish then cute.

It was really difficult trying to get my daughter to sit and read the book, because she simply was not interested in the stories or characters whatsoever! ... Read More:
