I have always been told that, as a fan of fantasy and humor, I needed to read Terry Pratchett. And after reading THE AMAZING MAURICE AND HIS EDUCATED RODENTS, I now understand what everyone was talking about. Pratchett's style is simultaneously witty, entertaining, and incisive; he succeeds in this children's book in saying more about society than most adult books ever manage, and he does so while making you laugh out loud.

Set in an obscure corner of Discworld, the fantasy world in which Pratchett has written numerous other books for adults, a cat named Maurice discovers suddenly the ability to talk--and not just to talk, but to think and to reason. Maurice believes himself to be the only animal afflicted with this talent, until ... Read More:

Some people weren't as keen on this as a bit of a change of scenery and more politics than battles, however I thought this showed how Sharpe has grown, and how he is more than just a soldier now. Of course Sharpie does it in his own way, and there are still fights and love interests, but it does also show London at the time, and gives a real insight in how Wellingtons campaign never really hit home to the normal people without the benefit of TV and cinema. I enjoyed this book, sad that there are only 4 more to read!

I bought Dawn of Empire on the recommendation of a friend and as a big fan of historical novels from the likes of Iggulden, Cornwall, and Scarrow was immediately impressed by the quality and intensity of the story line and characters. No sooner had I finished the Dawn, than I picked up a copy of the sequal, and I'm pleased to say I wasn't dissappointed! The quality of writing was good already, but this takes Barone to a new level. It's really great to pick up a book that has the power to capture one's attention so completely and maintain it to the very end. I really can't wait to learn more about Eskkar and Trella's adventure, let hope we don't have to wait too long!

I had read through the whole series of the Sharpe book before I got to this one, and, to tell the truth, I had to do away with my aversion of Sharpe's (Cornwell's) French-hating opinions.
But in this instance, I was really shocked by biased account of the battle and of the ill opinion of everything non-English. The last stage of the battle as described in the book very perversly forgets to mention the role of the Belgian forces when stopping the attack by the French Imperial Guard.
This leads me to wonder how much is actually true in the accounts of the Peninsula campaign. I will certainly not read Azincourt, nor any other book by this author, nor will I recommend him to friends.

At first I was cautious to read the books because I thought, it is just another 'so do' Harry Potter but it is not! The main character has one gift as all the other endowed children in the academy as well. The story line combines both parts of his life in school and out very nicely and the adventures never seem to seize.
One gets the impression the author gets more and more comfortable with writing and the stories are exciting from the first page on.
I am looking forward to the next book.

Although back to the familiar battleground Sharpe, Cornwell again manages to come up with a new enemy who, of course, Sharpe needs to sort out. The new characters introduced in this book are some of his strongest to date, which makes you feel the hatred and passion of our down to earth hero. A good addition to the series!

I read this trilogy, Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsehen, in order and thank goodness! Lirael could be read as a 'one off' but so much better with Sabriel as a backgound. Lirael was a gripping book; I thoroughly enjoyed it; though I do have reservations about the recommended age. Any young teen of a nervous disposition could find it a bit much and I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone under 14. Serious death and destruction amongst the magic & fantasy. My teens are long gone but there's no age limit on a good book!Interesting the teenage personality 'types'that feature in these books. We all know someone like the main characters. To understand and get the best from Abhorsen, you really need to have read Lirael. Hope there's a follow up and we find out what happens next. ... This is a real transition novel, here Sharpe finally begins to believe that maybe he should be an officer. It contains the usual coincidence that Sharpe is once again conveniently in the right place at the right time in Historic terms, the usual love interest and the fast paced action. A worthy addition to the Sharpe series.
