The Generals is the second book of a four-part series chronicling the lives of the Duke of Wellington and Napoleon Bonaparte. The Generals carries off where the first book of the series, Young Bloods, finished. This is turning out to be an excellent series and The Generals is just as good, if not better, than Young Bloods. this is because in The Generals we are in the midst of the Revolutionary (later Napoleonic) Wars - thus there is plenty of military action, much more so than Young Bloods, which was more of a scene-setter.

The book covers Arthur Wellesley's (later the Duke of Wellington) campaigns in India, the highlight of which is his role in the defeat of Sultan Tipoo of Mysore and the capture of Tipoo's capital of Seringapatam. ... Read More:

Like its predecessor it drags on far too long in an attempt to be an epic, however the snatches of the book based in America are enthralling.

I made the mistake of loving The Other Boleyn Girl, The Boleyn Inheritance, The Constant Princess etc and am now reading Gregory's back catalogue and am getting disappointed each step I take..

In Vampire Mountain, Darren and Mr Crepsley make their way to a Vampire council meeting. In Trails of Death Darren must prove his worth to the vampire clan by passing five deadly trials and in Vampire Prince Darren must contemplate his future in the vampire world.

After the first three books gave us a taste of who Darren Shan was and his adjustment from an ordinary school boy to a vampire, we are invited into the world of vampires in these three books as we learn of their traditions, their habits and their personalities. The author tells his stories well and has created an intriguing background for the lives of vampires.

Vampire Mountain is a slow paced novel as Darren and Crepsley make their way there. Slow moving but there are a ... Read More:

Books : Under the Eagle (Roman Legion 1)
I am an avid historical fiction fan, and in my search for a new author (as I have finished all the Cornwell, Iggulden and Manfredi books) I found Simon Scarrow. This is the first in an excellent series of novels about 2 unlikely friends thrown together in the heat of battle in the Roman army. These books are well researched, well written and extremely easy to read. These are like a cross between Cornwell's Sharpe and the Rome TV series. An excellent read!

... I'm loving the illustrated version. Even though I keep being told that it's a children's book, yet I have noticed that these people who keep telling me that it's for children not adults are trying to borrow it!

As a Terry Pratchett/Discworld fan I found that I fell for the Nac Mac Feegle and young Tiffany Aching. When I saw there was going to be an illustrated version I ordered it immediately, had the order cancelled by Amazon due to unexpected delay, then reordered it again. I waited so long for it that I was worried when it was finally sent. However I was not let down, it's been beautifully done.

I like one of the other reviewers have now ordered my second copy due to the grubby hands of those who think it is for children only.

Sharpe's Fortress is the third of the stories about Richard Sharpe in India. If you haven't read Sharpe's Tiger and Sharpe's Triumph, I strongly urge you to read those books before this one. You'll like them, and they provide very helpful background for the events in Sharpe's Fortress.

After saving Sir Arthur Wellesley's life at the Battle of Assaye (described in Sharpe's Triumph, book two in chronology in the series), Richard Sharpe was raised out of the ranks into the officer class as an ensign. In Sharpe's Fortress, it becomes obvious that he's arrived in no man's land in a Scottish unit. The Scots don't want any English in the unit; most ensigns are about 12 years old and don't do anything except watch; and men in the ranks are jealous of Sharpe's promotion. ... Read More:

If I was not forced to at least give the book one star, it would be getting no stars... 'Unauthorised Guide' in the title should have given it away. This book is dreadful. Does Lois H. Gresh actually believe that this guide is adding any value to the 'Twilight Saga' or providing anything insightful to its dedicated fans? The author is trying to make money off the back of the success of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Saga and the upcoming Twilight movie. Truly dreadful!!! Do not waste money to buy this book.

This was an excellent and highly informative read. Previous reviewers have pretty much covered the aspects and arguments of the book so I won't repeat what has already been said.

Along with E P Sanders' "The Historical Figure of Jesus", I consider Tabor has got the closest to the real Jesus, that is, the Jesus living in first century Galilee. I have no trouble viewing Jesus as both a "viceroy for God" (as Sanders asserts Jesus saw his role as) and a would-be king of an independent Israel with apocalyptic tendencies (as Tabor sees him).

Tabor writes in a scholarly, yet popular and easy to follow manner, which helps to make a difficult subject accessible to scholar and layman alike. The notes and references at the back are plentiful, complete with with ... Read More:

Its beginning to look like the superbly structured Flash for Freedom!, this book's immediate predecessor, was the high point of the series. Flashman gets three-and-a-half stars just for being Flashman, of course, but this tale starts at a leisurely pace before bursting into action at Balaclava, then tailing off again. Those who have read the series so far will be familiar with our anti-hero's historic tourism, romping through bit-parts in the major events of the nineteenth century. This time it is the Charge of the Light Brigade. It has to be said GMF writes battle and action scenes brilliantly, though in this case a detailed knowledge of the Crimean campaign, characters, and controversies (or at least access to Wikipedia) would be helpful. The Charge is a hard act to follow and for the ... Read More:
