Just used this guide on a four day trip around Brittany and Normandy. While there wasn't anything there totally inaccurate I did find the tone of the book irritating. It was overly negative about a lot of things. It dammned some quite charming places. After a while we just ignored the books advice. I would have preferred to have a guide book written by someone who appeared to actually enjoy the area they were visiting. I know Rough Guide try to be a bit irreverent but this takes it too far.

I like all the eyewitness guides - lots of images so you can see which parts to visit. In fact this saved me a holiday as afterreading it I realised that Brittany wasn't the untouched paradise I'd imagined! I'll still go, but I'm not in the rush to go there now that I was before buying this.

Good at explaining the differences between the different regions within Brittany, which is what I wanted. Needs more aerial and 'honest' photography, but generally good.

I've just read the previous review and feel obliged to redress the balance, having bought this book from Amazon prior to our own family holiday in Brittany this year.

In point 1. his review states that there isn't enough accommodation information but goes on to suggest in point 4. that they get rid of the accommodation details to make way for more information on attractions?! Which is it to be??? Do you want accommodation details in there or not!? What's more, with some 750 miles of coastline in Brittany alone, you're not going to easily be able to cover every beach, let alone every accommodation option or every attraction. That's just simply not realistic.

I bought the book having already booked our accommodation ... Read More:

Proably the most helpful guide for planning day trips within Brittany, or any other area, I've come across. Succinct descriptions, simple maps, admission costs and opening times clearly expressed. His enthusiam for the area comes across in all he writes. Buy this book, plan a memorable holidays and you'll enjoy your trips to Brittany as much as he and I have done.

Charles Davis clearly knows Brittany well and in Bumping About Brittany he's come up with a beguiling mix of anecdote, history, and a liberal dose of what reads like outright fantasy. It's all very enjoyable, though, and on the whole very well written. I'm not sure all the excursions he describes would bear repeating, but he packs a lot of information in, and from what I know of the region, these essays should illuminate any trip to Brittany, even if you don't visit the places he describes. I reckon it would be best read before travelling as a kind of appetiser, though (speaking as someone who hasn't been to France for several years) it also works well as a trigger of happy memories. His humour is sharp, occasionally verging on the sardonic, but ... Read More:

I bought this book prior to a trip to France. The book is easy to use, with nice pictures and easy to read text and a useful map. It is in a small size format (A5) so fits neatly into your glove box or bag. However, we found that all the places that it described were grossly exaggerated - which was very disappointing when we got there only to discover that the place was considerably smaller or with less to do than described. Still a very useful book though, and we saw a lot of places that we may not have otherwise known about. By the way if you are visiting Brittany, please note that most places are completely shut between 1 and 4 pm, and generally 'all day markets' are only open in the morning!

Judy Smith's book is much more than a collection of walks: it is also full of interesting and enticing information about the history, landscape and culture of Brittany, the Celtic heartland of France. As a resident of Brittany, I have used the book with pleasure, enjoying walks in stunning scenery and gaining a greater understanding of my environment in the process. The directions and sketch maps are full and accurate, with details of all the sights on route, both natural and man-made. In addition to the main walks - which cover all four departments of Brittany - there are suggestions for dozens of others in the same areas. The author also provides an overview of each walk and handy summaries of practicalities (such as length, parking, level of difficulty) ... Read More:
